Talk about a big bird. Visitors who step into Tampa International Airport will come face to beak with a huge new sculpture of a flamingo. Created by artist Matthew Mazzotta, the hand-sculpted flamingo stands 6.7 m (22 ft.) tall—or about five times the height of the real bird. It’s found below a shiny ceiling that’s meant to look like rippling water. That makes it seem as if the pink bird is dipping its head underwater. Mazzotta made the sculpture to be interactive, so he encourages travellers to get up close and touch the friendly flamingo. Don’t mind if we do!…

This nest is definitely not for the birds. Last spring, a pair of artists weaved a huge nest in a remote Swedish forest. The two creators gathered fallen twigs and hay to build the nest around the trunk of a tree. They also included seating inside. Rather than be a spot for birds to lay their eggs, this nest is designed as a resting place for people who stumble upon it while walking through the forest. The artists even hosted a small concert inside their creation. But the music wasn’t for a human audience. It was meant for the tree itself and any wildlife that might be nearby. Enjoy those tunes!…

LOOK CLOSELY First, Arushi used photos of space that had been taken by four different telescopes in different parts of the world. SEEING STARS Then she used a computer program called Python to create an algorithm that would scan NASA and Gaia (European Space Agency) star catalogues (maps of previously discovered stars). The algorithm used the catalogue data to identify all the known stars and asteroids in the telescope pictures. Any other objects in the photos got classified as potential asteroids. ON THE MOVE Arushi researched asteroids and learned that they move in a straight line. Have you built anything in Minecraft? Teenager Christopher Slayton has taken building to the next level in the game. He spent a month and a half working to create the universe! Slayton used virtual cubes to make all the planets in our solar system, as well as stars, gases, dust, and even a black hole. To get every detail right, he researched space and even went skydiving to get a look at Earth from above.
