Drawing a blank when you hear the name Radha Blank? That will soon change, thanks to her autobiographical film, which won top honors at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The multi-tasking Blank directs, writes and stars, playing a 39-year-old Brooklyn playwright and teacher who’s worried that she’s already past her prime. As a creative outlet, she takes up rapping. Wry, charismatic and self-effacing, Blank offers a heartfelt, unflinching portrait of the trials and tributions of African-American women of a certain age. The dramedy, shot on gorgeous black-and-white 35 millimeter film, does suffer from pacing issues and could have benefited from one more edit. Still, it’s an impressive debut all around.
