Near the end of last year, VISI won a coveted Ozzie Award in New York for best overall design of our print magazine. We were all thrilled, none more so than our super-talented art director, Anton Pietersen, who single-handedly designs and sends our beautiful magazine to the printers every two months. For this, our Design Issue, Anton has worked extremely hard to create a modern look by simplifying the typefaces we use and introducing white borders around images. By using very little text on the pictures he has allowed them to shine. THE SETTING IS MOLETSAMONG, a small village in Mahikeng where herds of goats, cows and donkeys roam the dry veld for morsels of green grass. In the distance, a man-made dam shimmers. It is scorching hot with a whipping dusty wind. The kind of heat that makes my nose dry and creates the constant urge for me to take deep breaths, as if the heat is suffocating me. It’s a place where water is scarce and is therefore treasured by man and animal alike. Surface design company Robin Sprong Wallpaper (#RSWallpaper) had an epic 2015. “We stitched 250 maps for an enormous wallpaper for a Cattle Baron restaurant, redid Investec’s offices on Greyston Drive in Johannesburg, decorated Vice magazine’s new offices in Toronto, Canada, and we were represented at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven by Exposize, our new partners there” says Robin. Open spaces, natural light and elements such as greenery, plants and timber are beginning to feature in bathrooms, and raw materials like concrete are becoming increasingly popular, says Murray Sharp, the winner of the 2015 Cobra Product Design Competition. According to finalist Andrew Mboyi, people are starting to expect more from bathroom experiences, leading to a need for personalised spaces. This shift in thinking has lead to bathrooms becoming central to interior trends forecasts. And industrial designers have come to realise the true impact of their designs, from the broader aesthetics right down to the choice of taps. Pretoria architect Braam de Villiers of Earthworld Architects won the Haute Lumière Light Award 2015 for a concept inspired by the night sky, called Moonlight. It pays tribute to South African artist Berco Wilsenach and his fascination with celestial bodies. Braam’s Moonlight, which has a light source, a mirror and a mirror stand, emulates the way the moon reflects light from the sun. The annual Haute Lumière Light Award is driven by Paul Pamboukian of Pamboukian lightdesign as a way of raising awareness of lighting design. The brief was to design a light unit with either single or multiple power sources for a specific interior space, and the entries were judged on originality and creativity. “In nature there is no waste; everything gets used.” This was the cue that prompted South African furniture and product designer Louw Roets to create a range of lampshades from paper pulp, a recyclable material that is just one of the many waste products of modern industry. It was to be a place where women could gather to celebrate creativity, fashion, style and food, and enjoy advice from experts in their fields. As French Romantic poet Gérard de Nerval put it so eloquently, every flower is a soul blossoming in nature. It may have been this very quote that inspired landscape artist Keith Kirsten to use the Natal plum, or Carissa macrocarpa, so extensively when he designed the sprawling gardens at Delaire Graff Estate near Stellenbosch. After 53 years of making carpets in the Free State – it all started with a converted blanket loom in 1962 – Nouwens Carpets has developed a reputation for luxury. When Pierre Antoine, designer and owner of Fibre Designs, and interior designer Leanne Fairweather saw a gap in the market for hardy outdoor floorware, they decided to launch a range of all-weather crocheted rugs, pillows, pouffes, ottomans, sun loungers and banquettes. “What was available [here] was mostly of European origin and therefore all but unaffordable” says Pierre. “The Verandah Collection is proudly local.” After the clothing manufacturing industry experienced a decline in Limpopo, Fibre Designs launched an empowerment training project in the region, calling on the talents of local craftswomen to weave and crochet their creations. “We’re fortunate to have an ongoing project, which is progressing with much success” he says. “The Verandah Collection is now being exported to the UK, Europe, Hong Kong and the Indian Ocean islands, and…

He started an interior design business at the age of 19, the fashion brand Bitter Chocolate years later, and recently returned to interiors… Now, drawing on 25 years’ design experience, Philip Pikus has launched his first fabric collection, Contemporary Classics. Philip has made use of cotton, linen and blends thereof, as well as bamboo, and opted for a neutral palette of taupe, grey, bone and linen. “The range has been edited so colours, tones and textures complement and coordinate with each other” Philip says. “As with fashion, interior trends come and go… There’s always the new black.” Simply put, if homes had collections designed for them, the Contemporary Classics collection would be the Chanel equivalent: refined and timeless, perfect dressed up or down. Each year, the Eat Out team seeks to improve on the standard they’ve set the previous year, a job made easier by partnering with Rainbow Experiential Marketing. At the venue, guests were welcomed into a drinks area fully decorated with furniture from Goeters, no stranger to a bespoke shindig, as its main business is providing the decor and lighting for weddings. Peppered throughout were canapés imaginatively turned into installations by Annalize Sainsbury, head chef and owner of Escoffier Catering. Once guests were seated at their tables for the main event, they were kept informed and entertained by video content about the 20 nominees produced by Ginkgo Agency. To update a cheap-looking light fitting, place a circular metal disc between the ceiling and the base of the light fitting. It will look fabulous and the disc will reflect the light more effectively, improving the light quality in the room. Choose a 3 mm-thick metal disc that suits your decor style.
