downing street’s revolving door

The political circus is back in town. Number 10 will soon have another occupant and Her Majesty the Queen will soon receive her third prime minister in five years – the time it normally takes a single PM to serve their general election mandate. The Queen, I guess, won’t make much of an effort to learn the new one’s first name until such time as he or she convinces her they’re in for the long game (convincing the electorate is another matter entirely). But what choices do we have in these uncertain times? Country folk like you and I could be forgiven for thinking Westminster has gone mad. Not only has Brexit become more and more a festering sore that is increasingly causing concern, we have the general licence debacle, a…

general licence ban cost countryside £29m

Pressure has piled on the government to restore the general licences to allow the control of pest birds, after BASC estimated that losses to farms and rural businesses were in the region of £29 million so far. Figures collected by BASC’s survey of 29,657 shooters paint a damning picture of the effects of the licence revocation. Of the survey respondents, 96 per cent said they viewed the previous general licence system as beneficial. They had contributed 3.4 million days of pest control annually, which almost totally ground to a halt when the licences were withdrawn. Now, 86 per cent of respondents reported increased risk to crops, 79 per cent to wild birds and 59 per cent to feed for livestock. Four-fifths of respondents reported some form of economic loss, adding up to an…

could scotland alter its general licences?

Fears arose that Scotland could follow England’s example and perform a vanishing act on its general licences after Scottish Natural Heritage announced a 12-week consultation on the future of the licences north of the border. However, SNH and BASC were quick to reassure shooters that this would be a far more measured process than has taken place to the south. Robbie Kernahan, SNH’s head of national operations, said: “We want to ensure that general licences in Scotland are clear, proportionate and fit-for-purpose. “In light of the complicated situation in England with general licences right now, we have decided to bring forward our consultation which had been scheduled for 2020. “We would like to reassure those who are currently operating under general licences in Scotland that these remain in place, allowing those who comply with…

thousands raised at gwct auction

The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust Scottish Auction has raised over £135,000 at its latest auction on 2 May. The long-established event once again sold out as those in attendance were treated to a champagne reception and dinner hosted at Prestonfield House, including venison donated by Highland Game. The main business saw a range of sporting lots including an eight-gun day in the Borders with dinner and accommodation for 16 at Duns Castle, a mixed species shoot at GWCT’s Scottish Demonstration Farm at Auchnerran with dinner and accommodation at Douneside House, and a week’s fishing on the Carron. Bidding also included a ‘your weight in gin and tonic’ donated by Edinburgh Gin. Overall the evening raised over £135,000 towards the GWCT. Bryan Johnson, chairman of the Scottish Auction, remarked: “Once again considerable thanks…

last chance for ngo survey responses

You’ve still got a few days to respond to the NGO’s survey on the work of gamekeepers on conservation projects nationwide. The survey, being run jointly with the Scottish Gamekeepers Association, was extended until 30 June, which means there’s still time to submit your evidence – if you’re quick. The aim of the survey is to amass evidence about all the work game management contributes to environments and species around the UK – something that’s often overlooked in mainstream media and political discussions about the countryside. NGO chairman, Liam Bell, said: “We do not shout loudly enough about how our efforts play a crucial role in preserving the habitats and wildlife that are so import to Britain’s biodiversity. I would urge all those that have not yet completed their questionnaire to send it…
