They say that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. “They” usually mean that genetics dictate that children don’t differ too greatly from their parents. It might well be true that apples don’t generally fall too far from the parent tree but it’s also true that sometimes there can be a sizeable wind blowing when the fruit drops. As a case in point, I give you my younger daughter and me. We share many traits, I’m happy to say, but when it comes to handiwork we are light years apart. It was a Wednesday afternoon and I was dropping envelopes into my friends’ mailboxes. On each of the envelopes I had written, “to be opened on Saturday”. My friends didn’t know it yet, but inside the envelopes were blindfolds (well, airline eye masks and a few headscarfs). Come Saturday, I was taking six friends and my fiancé, Henry, on a surprise adventure. Before I continue sharing this great adventure story, I’ve got to take you to the summer of 2017. Monthly inspiration I read about seven magazines every month, but WellBeing is where I get the most value for money. I read the magazine over many days, sometimes weeks, as it’s like a thick book just with a beautiful cover and inner page layouts. I love all of the columns, especially “Raising a Shy Child” and “Stoicism”. This month, I really look forward to trying the recipes featuring Indigenous ingredients, especially lemon myrtle. What are your three favourite rituals for feeling renewed this spring? • I change the bed linen to bright new sheets and colourful cushions, write down my intentions for the coming season and sit in the garden with a good book and enjoy the new growth of plants and flowers around me. Unsung heroes I felt compelled to write in after reading your “Unsung Heroes” article about grandparents in WellBeing #180. One of my greatest joys in life was introducing my first grandchild to my own grandmother, Oma. Sadly, Oma passed away soon after this at age 93. Oma was my inspiration and rock. A Dutch immigrant, she raised six children in Australia on her own and went on to have 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Oma left a legacy for us all. She was hardworking, passionate about life and family, a valued member of the community and volunteered up until the age of 90. My fondest childhood memories are going on road trips with Oma, learning about her life in the Netherlands and enjoying family gatherings at her home. Taking…
