one small change – little moves that make a big difference

“If you’re at a crossroads, our Bonus will help you find a way forward” A few months ago we were in the office discussing the need for guidance in our middle years – a roadmap to help women like us find a new way forward. We are so different to our mothers’ generation – their lives were mapped out much more clearly – and today there’s no such satnav. There are endless possibilities, which is wonderful, but with so many roads, it’s difficult to know which one to take. This month’s Bonus: Midlife without a Map (p65), will help you find a new route and feel fulfilled. Our brilliant life coach, Carole Ann Rice, explains why so many of us experience a wobble when we hit a midlife point, and her four-point…

“From speaking out to crossing off to-do lists, a few tweaks have made a big difference to my life”It’s not the things you say you regret but the things you donÕt say Over the years I have made small changes to my life that have made a really big difference to the way I live it and – more importantly – how much I enjoy living it. The first change I made was a year ago when I came to the conclusion that you always (unless it’s your mother, of course!) have to speak your mind. Because I worked out that it’s not the things that you say that you live to regret but the things you don’t say, when you know you should have. Like when someone is rude and you let…

“i’ve finally learnt not to say ‘yes’ to everything…”

“I love letting my hair down. I used to have a cocktail between the six and ten o’clock bulletins” FIONA BRUCE’S voice – deep, authoritative – enters the room before she does. You can hear her distinctive tones as she climbs the stairs to the studio, apologising for being late (even though it’s only a couple of minutes). She appears unaffected by the midsummer heat in head-to-toe white, her eyebrows impeccably arched, her hair newsreader-perfect. It is instantly clear why the 53-year-old has quite so many male fans – and why she was originally deemed “too sexy” to present Antiques Roadshow (her predecessor was Michael Aspel). This year, the BBC show celebrates its 40th anniversary – as well as Fiona’s 10th as a presenter – and she loves roaming the country…

“my children call her ‘auntie telly!’”

NEIL BRUCE, 55, is head of wine at the pub chain Fuller’s. He lives in London with his wife Lisa and their two sons – Mackie, 17, and Billy, 12. NEIL I’m two and a half years older than Fiona so growing up, I’m afraid I used to play with my older brother more than Fiona… FIONA But he did let me borrow his Action Man, so there would be romances between Action Man and Sindy! I was a girly girl, so I played with my dolls. I wasn’t terribly interested in Neil and Alasdair [her eldest brother]. NEIL But when we moved to London when I was 18, I certainly became more interested in Fiona… FIONA Well, you were certainly more interested in my friends! NEIL I did go out with the sister of…
