may hong kong coin show canceled

Editor’s Note: Following is a reprint of an email statement sent to World Coin News April 6. Dear All, As a valued exhibitor/visitor of Hong Kong Coin Show, you are at the heart of our team. In the hope of the alleviation of the coronavirus situation, we had postponed the event till May, meanwhile closely monitoring the situation as it evolved. At this stage, the effects of coronavirus are evident across the world, with burgeoning travel restrictions. As per the announcement of Hong Kong SAR government on March 17, 2020, compulsory quarantine is required to people arriving in Hong Kong who have been to all overseas countries in the past 14 days. We also received a letter from the Centre for Health Protection that organizers should cancel or defer mass events until the…

coins of the palestine mandate

Why are there three languages on coins of the Palestine Mandate? Article 22 of the July 24, 1922 Mandate for Palestine reads: “English, Arabic, and Hebrew shall be the official languages of Palestine. Any statement or inscription in Arabic on stamps or money in Palestine shall be repeated in Hebrew and any statement or inscription in Hebrew shall be repeated in Arabic.” I know there are all sorts of hokey modern issues, but did the city of Frankenstein ever issue any coins of its own? There is at least one anonymous medieval bracteate that is attributed to Frankenstein in Thuringia, however, the better known issues are an 1858 relic medal issued by Frankenstein und Zadel and the 1917 notgeld issue of Frankenstein-Zabkowice. I’ve seen the Frankenstein relic medal of 1858. There is a damaged…

pobjoy mint debuts ‘big cats’ 2020

POBJOY MINT RECENTLY announced the launch of a new series of “Big Cats” coins to be issued for Sierra Leone. This follows the extremely popular 2019 Big Five African animal series from Pobjoy and allows collectors to continue on in the same vein with a new series. This series begins with the Lion, pictured in profile facing left. The Cheetah has followed also with a left facing profile of this magnificent “big cat.” The high relief displays the power and determination of these amazing animals, leading us to want to know more about them. The Lion is long and low, built for power and striking force. It’s the second largest of the “big cats,” but probably the most widely known from the many books, movies and live shows featuring this noble animal.…

the coinage of empress anna, 1730-1740

THE DEATH OF Russian Czar Fedor Alexievich in 1682 created a vacuum, in which rival claimants fought for power. His sister Sophia, unable to become ruler because she was a woman, staged a coup d’etat and put her brothers Ivan and Peter on the throne as puppet czars. Peter I staged his own revolt in 1689, but asked his brother Ivan to stay on as co-czar. Ivan V, sick in both mind and body, was merely window dressing and the real power lay with Peter. Unlike some feudal societies Sophia did not suffer greatly after her fall from power. She was, however, given long-term lodgings in a convent, effectively removing her from any role in the government. Ivan died in 1696, leaving three daughters: Catherine, Anna, and Praskovaya. All were raised by…

scythians descend on central asia

WHEN I WAS a junior world coin collector, back in the days of the Craig catalog, there was only “Central Asia.” There one would find the 19th century coins of the Emirs of Bukhara and so forth, before they were conquered by Russia. The coins weren’t available, though. They were locked in the Soviet Union. It was a lively place, Central Asia. People grew crops there, created towns, and traded. Bukhara, now in Uzbekistan, was one of the great cities even 2,000 years ago along with Samarkand and Tashkent, also in Uzbekistan. Tajikistan is shaped like a fist making a thumb’s up sign. Uzbekistan surrounds the thumb on three sides. The Silk Road was not a single route, people went east or west and made decisions to go north or south along the…

gods of the world returns in 2020 with shiva

NEW IN THE culture-bridging Gods of the World Series is a numismatic tribute to Shiva, the great God of Hinduism. This series features remarkably high relief achieved through the use of Smartminting technology, which gives these coins a very attractive look. For the Shiva issue, we admire the intricate ornamentation on Shiva’s decorative bands and headdress. Also lovely in detail is the attire of Bhairava, the fierce manifestation of Shiva’s powers of annihilation. Bhairava is the bull seen on the left opposite Shiva. The arms of Shiva hold a trident and bowl of fire symbolizing Rudra and Virabhadra, respectively. Rudra is associated with both storms and the hunt, while Virabhadra represents the fierce wrath of Shiva. Struck with 3 ounces of .999 fine silver, the Shiva issue is 50 mm in…
