editor’s note

Each month our team is faced with the challenge of producing a great cover, one we are all happy with, that encapsulates the content and ethos of the magazine and that will have our readers oohing and aahing and wishing they were there. This month was no exception. We attack the problem from different angles, toying with cover lines (sometimes even calling on our Facebook followers for help), typography, colour and, of course, images. Once we find a cover image, the rest of the magazine seems to fall in place and we all breathe a sigh of relief. What could be more symbolic of the delights of ‘life in the slow lane’ than our image of dear Daffy (apologies if it’s Donald) waddling unperturbed through an abundant veggie patch. For Cape Town-based Judy, her time spent interviewing artists in Betty’s Bay and Hermanus also was a chance to soak up the astonishing environment herself. Other times we would ride from Livingstone and take great delight in throwing the green cushions over the Vic Falls Bridge (really naughty stuff). Same in Kimberley, we would arrive there midday and the train would only arrive in Bloemfontein after 8pm and then depart for Grahamstown at 11pm so we would hitch to Bloem, have a mixed grill for two then go…
