comfort and joy

This year has been a doozy, hasn’t it? As much as the holiday season can be a time of cheer and celebration, it can also be a very lonely time for those who have experienced loss this year—whether that’s a loved one or a job due to COVID19, or anything else. So this Christmas, I want to remind you of a few things. You are not alone. I personally know what’s it’s like to grieve during the holidays, and it’s not fun. If loneliness or isolation plagues your holiday season this year, I want to tell you that you are loved—both by your immediate community and through this farmhouse community. If you’re looking for immediate ways to connect with people right now, I would encourage you to join the farmhouse community…

Socially Distanced CHRISTMAS 5 ideas to connect safely with your community this season. 1. CAROLING. This is a great way to connect to neighbors and bring cheer to everyone’s front porch. Just step back after you ring the bell so you’re at least six feet from the front door. 2. COOKIES. For many families, making and giving Christmas cookies is a cherished tradition. This year, buy individually wrapped cookies you can give away, or put together cookie ingredients in a Mason jar. Disinfect the jar and wait a few days before delivery to make sure it’s completely clean. 3. TREE LIGHTING. Instead of going to a large gathering, have a tree lighting with your family at home. After you decorate the tree, turn off other lights; then sit around the tree with hot chocolate or…

diy spindle christmas tree

I don’t know about you, but I have a slight addiction to spindles. I always save them from chairs that are too far gone to use, old tables and railings, and they are super easy to find at vintage stores. But what to do with all those spindles? I made a really easy spindle tree. Here’s how you can make your own. WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • Collection of spindles• Saw (optional)• Drill and drill bits, including a hole bit• Metal rod (length should equal the Christmas tree height)• 4x4" wood• Washer and nut• 1x12" wood• Paintbrush• Sweet Pickins Milk Paint in color of choice (used here: Flour Sack)• Sandpaper at 220 grit (optional)• Sweet Pickins Oil Wax (optional) WHAT YOU’LL DO: 1. Gather up your spindle stash, and decide on the size you would…

diy christmas wreath

Tip CHOOSE A BOLD FONT FOR YOUR MESSAGE SO YOU HAVE MORE ROOM TO WORK WITH THE GLUE. Consistently, one of my favorite small DIYs is the front door wreath. It’s a good project to like, because being outside in the sun and rain means most front door wreaths don’t last for more than a few seasons. If you’re in need of a new Christmas wreath this year and want to try your hand at making it yourself, here’s a simple, cheerful wreath to greet passersby. WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • Plain or flocked wreath of choice• Small wood banner sign (used here: banner sign from Michaels)• Optional: wood filler and sandpaper• Paint of choice• Paintbrush• Pencil• Craft glue• Toothpick• Glitter of choice• Hot glue and wire• Optional: Christmas ornaments WHAT YOU’LL DO: 1. First, prep the…
