hey google

Yes, it is true that smartening your home is a slippery slope. From small things, big things grow, and teching-up your house is a lot of fun. It could start with just a single $40 smart bulb that you control from an app. How sweet it is to choose any of millions of colours and intensities. You’ll laugh out loud the first time you try it in your home, as you realise the serious potential in that moment. I’ve become quite partial to war room red in my gaming room. It makes me feel like I’m stepping into the combat information centre in a warship. So you get a couple more. Maybe a few more. But now your smartphone isn’t so great for controlling so many smart bulbs. Sure, it’s still…

inside apc

APC is Australia’s oldest consumer technology magazine – having been consistently in print for over 35 years, since our first issue way back in May 1980 – and we take that heritage and responsibility very seriously. While our focus is obviously on the personal computer – it’s in our name, after all – the very definition of the PC has changed and shifted markedly since the early 1980s. As such, we touch on many other areas of tech, too, from smartphones and apps to peripherals, accessories, online services and beyond. We have two main goals: to track down the best of modern tech and also to help our readers make the most of it. We’re also an open church in terms of platforms. We know most people aren’t wed to a…

first details of intel ice lake products

Intel has lifted the lid on the processors for both its Ice Lake-U and Ice Lake-Y mobile processors. These processors are now being produced in sufficient volume to supply key launch partners with hardware in order to enable laptop and mobile designs to hit the shelves by the end of the year. Intel is not currently discussing any desktop or server processor equivalents at this time: the base Ice Lake design is currently a quad-core processor with HyperThreading, and beefy integrated graphics. Intel’s Ice Lake platform is the company’s second attempt at producing a 10nm chip for the mass market, and follows on from the Cannon Lake platform. Using ‘the same but different’ 10nm process, Ice Lake features a new 10th Gen Core microarchitecture called Sunny Cove, Gen11 graphics, and support…

8chan dropped by cloudflare following us shootings

Web services company Cloudflare announced that it will no longer provide security protection to the imageboard site 8chan following the recent mass shooting in El Paso, Texas. 8chan is at the center of the discussion due to the alleged shooter posting his 2,300 word ‘manifesto’ on the site 19 minutes before the shooting began. Cloudflare had previously cited free speech issues as the reason it had not pulled its services from extremist websites, though the company did end support for the white extremist site the Daily Stormer in the past. In a blog post announcing that it would terminate 8chan’s service, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince explained the hosting service’s reasoning: “The rationale is simple: they have proven themselves to be lawless and that lawlessness has caused multiple tragic deaths. Even…
