beaches, nightclubs? europe mulls how to get tourists back

The Mediterranean resort town of Ayia Napa is known for its boisterous parties. Each summer, thousands of young foreign tourists pack the dance floors of its nightlife district after a day at the beach. But the pandemic silenced the exuberant Napa Strip district as the island nation of Cyprus went into a lockdown to halt the spread of the coronavirus. Now nightclub owners wonder when social distancing rules will be eased enough for the party to resume — and what those new parties will look like. “We know at nightclubs, young people will go to dance and have a good time. But then you have to tell them that they have to keep 2 meters (6 feet) apart from each other?” asked Charalambos Alexandrou, the spokesman for a group representing local clubs,…

walmart becomes a pandemic lifeline, online sales surge 74%

Walmart emerged as one of the few lifelines to millions of people as the coronavirus spread, leading to surging profit and sales for the world’s largest retailer. Online sales in the U.S. jumped 74% for its fiscal first quarter that ended April 30, which captured the brunt of the pandemic’s outbreak. Same-store sales rose 10% at U.S. Walmart stores on strong sales of food, health and wellness goods. At a time when a huge swath of stores that sell non-essential merchandise temporarily shut down, Walmart has the natural advantage of carrying the very items that consumers need during a pandemic. But unlike its online rivals like Amazon, Walmart enjoys an extensive network of nearly 5,000 physical stores and a variety of delivery and pick-up options that it ramped up to meet crushing demand…

privacy groups: tiktok app violating children’s privacy

Privacy watchdogs say that the popular TikTok video app is violating a children’s privacy law and putting kids at risk. A coalition of 20 groups, including Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and the Center for Digital Democracy, filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission saying that TikTok is collecting personal information of kids under 13 without their parents’ consent. TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, has exploded in popularity with young people thanks to its goofy, lighthearted feel and ease of use. At the same time, it’s drawn scrutiny from U.S. officials concerned about national-security risks due to its Chinese ownership and its popularity with kids. TikTok paid a $5.7 million fine to the FTC in 2019 over collecting personal information from kids under 13, a violation of the federal Children’s Online Privacy…

‘everyone has a story’: how will world remember pandemic?

Artist Obi Uwakwe was driving through Chicago’s empty streets, camera on his lap to document life during COVID-19, when he saw something that made him stop: a casket being carried out of a church while a few mourners stood by, their faces covered. The 43-year-old raised his camera and took a photograph. Later, it would become one of the images Uwakwe used to create paintings inspired by the pandemic. “To see maybe six people there, everyone wearing a mask,” he said, “it brought everything together.” Around the world, people like Uwakwe are creating photographs, paintings, emails, journals and social media posts that will shape how the world remembers the coronavirus pandemic for years and centuries to come. Museums and historical societies already are collecting materials, often with help from people accustomed to capturing…

in store: apple reopens outlets around the world

With no end to COVID-19 in sight, Apple is reopening its retail stores around the world, with precautions to protect customers and staffers. Now, we must evaluate what we’ve learned since the start of the pandemic, and question whether the virus will change retail forever. WELCOME BACK Though retail has only ever played a small part in Apple’s overall device sales strategy, news that the company would temporarily shutter all of its outlets outside of China on March 13 made it clear that the coronavirus would have a significant impact on the Cupertino giant. And though the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic has varied considerably from country to country, and indeed from state to state in the US, Apple made it clear from the start that its customers were a priority, and…

video app tiktok names top disney streaming exec as new ceo

TikTok, the popular short-video app that has also drawn national-security and privacy concerns, has a new high-profile CEO from Disney, Kevin Mayer. Mayer will also be chief operating officer of TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, and report to its founder and CEO, Yiming Zhang, the company announced this week. He led Disney’s streaming business, which launched Disney Plus in November and has already emerged as a threat in the increasingly competitive streaming-video arena, with 54.5 million subscribers. Mayer was also known for his role in building Disney through mergers, including the industry-changing 2019 acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s TV and film business that created an entertainment behemoth. TikTok’s app features short videos, many with music and dancing, that has become a favorite of younger people and is known for its goofy, light-hearted feel. However,…
