I’M ROLLING ALONG in a hotel parking lot in Tokyo, on what can best be described as part Segway, part Bird scooter—only way slower. Although the little electric-powered machine doesn’t go nearly fast enough for my tastes, it’s also easier to use than either of those aforementioned personal mobility mobiles, featuring a sturdy, three-wheeled design and a small platform that easily supports both of my feet. But just how valuable are these digital codes as training tools to top-level professional race car drivers, teams, and engineers? Ford recently offered us a chance to find out. LAST FALL, ON a writhing mountain two-lane on a perfect SoCal afternoon, I braked hard for a tight left-hander, blipped the throttle twice with my right foot as I worked the clutch with my left and the shift lever with my right hand, and clicked off two quick downshifts before squeezing back on the gas as the 2019 Mazda MX-5 RF convertible howled upward toward the next turn a quarter mile ahead. And right then it hit me: This heel-and-toe thing, that clutch pedal, the six-speed stick … man, I haven’t used a manual transmission in almost a year. WE KNOW BETTER now, of course, but off-gassing fumes is still very much a thing in new cars. With all the synthetic material in vehicle interiors, modern cars continue to let loose a sustained barrage of lightly tethered petrochemical matter—what we used to call new car smell—for occupants to breathe deep in the months after a new machine is first pressed into service. actually, c8 is great

I REMAIN A member of the Stuart (Florida) Corvette Club, since 2005, and I was a board member when I lived there. I had planned to buy a C7 Corvette to replace my C6, but I put on the brakes when I first saw the new C8. I read with interest, several times, Robert Cumberford’s review of the 2020 C8’s design (November 2019). I have no doubt Mr. Cumberford is a brilliant designer, but what interested me was the detail provided of, well, the details. The entire review focused on the smallest details of the design and nothing about the overall presentation—kinda like counting the brush strokes on the Mona Lisa to determine whether or not it’s beautiful.
