what’s in your beach bag?

Nathan Turner’s coastal California roots run deep: five generations, to be exact. As such, the designer, author, and entertaining expert comes from a long line of beach lovers. “Growing up, we sailed our boat, The Bolero, on weekends under the Golden Gate. The view from my bedroom was the Carquinez Strait that opens up to the San Francisco Bay,” he recalls. That time on the water proved influential. The designer is renowned for his relaxed, inviting spaces, full of texture and warmth. “I don’t get too caught up in the fact that there’s going to be sand on the floors and dogs running the halls,” he says. “I design rooms where those elements work with, not against, the decor.” While Turner and his partner, designer Eric Hughes, now live in Los…

the gulf’s hidden gem

There is a style and spirit to Galveston, the historic port city that has parked itself defiantly at the edge of Texas’s Gulf coastline for nearly two centuries. In fact, when the hurricane called the “Great Galveston Storm of 1900” nearly wiped it away, Galveston replied by elevating its residential footprint 8 feet higher, re-building, and carrying on (and on again, after Hurricane Ike in 2008). To walk the elevated sidewalks of the elegant historic downtown and the narrow streets lined with Victorian and early 20th-century homes is to discover a distinctly American treasure. Now, one of those gracious homes has emerged—thanks to a stunning restoration—as a luxury hideaway as alluring as the city itself. The Carr Mansion Bed & Breakfast, an 1866 Greek Revival mansion (with a Queen Anne addition),…

mississippi’s soulful art town

Along the pale sands that line Mississippi’s toe dipped into the Gulf of Mexico, there’s no sweeter coming together of art, place, and soul than in Ocean Springs. It was here, 101 years ago, that Annette McConnell Anderson and her husband, George, bought 24 acres of scrub-shaded land on the water, dreaming of creating an art colony and eventually moving their three boys from New Orleans to live there. What emerged are two artistic legacies. Shearwater Pottery, founded in 1928 by son and master potter Peter, remains a family-owned studio on the original land that creates and sells highly original—and collectible—ceramics. Houseware pieces like mugs, bowls, and plates shimmer with glazes that capture the Gulf’s hues, and Shearwater’s famous ceramic figures—from pirates and dock workers to seabirds and fish—evoke a fairy-tale…

the most stylish beach hotels 2019

THE CARIBBEAN Belmond Cap Juluca MAUNDAYS BAY, ANGUILLA It was spectacular before the storm: a strand of stark-white villas with Greco-Moorish domes and archways keeping chic company with the aquamarine shimmer of Maundays Bay. But when the eyewall of Hurricane Irma savaged and swamped Anguilla in late 2017, the damage to this star-studded sanctuary forced a reboot. And what a spectacular reboot it has been. Helmed by U.S.-based designer Lauren Rottet’s studio and debuting late last year, Belmond Cap Juluca has doubled down on exterior enchantments (including the stunning new Arawak Spa and a sea-edge infinity pool tiled to Moorish perfection) and interior refinements in its 66 rooms and 42 suites, including bold new textiles in botanical hues and lush little courtyards reached via expansive baths. Rates start at $725; belmond.com. Cobblers Cove SPEIGHTSTOWN, BARBADOS Revered…
