“It’s those beats that we are celebrating here” If you were to believe the various platitudes and tributes to the band’s founder member Florian Schneider, who sadly passed away a few months back, Kraftwerk were a band whose beats literally kick-started a multitude of genres. While assembling this month’s cover feature on electronic beats, then, it felt somewhat appropriate to wedge in a classic interview with Wolfgang Flür, the band’s ‘drummer’ during their most formidable period. In it, he claims to have instigated not just the band’s invention of the drum machine, but their most electronic foundation of beats. (Even more extraordinary was that he made these claims to me, back in 2007!) Schneider and the other founder member of Kraftwerk, Ralf Hütter, did apparently dispute these claims but there’s no…

New IK Multimedia gear The Italian megalith ramps things up with a feast of new releases IK Multimedia have had a busy few weeks, announcing a raft of new releases for computer-based musicians. First up, T-RackS Space Delay – an emulation of the timeless Roland Space Echo tape delay. Built on the same hybrid convolution and physical modelling technology as IK’s Tape Machine Collection (8/10, 276), this features the expected three playback heads, variable-speed motor and onboard spring reverb of the real thing. A number of completely new extensions have been thrown in too, including independent panning of each playback head and the spring, high- and low-pass filters, and the ability to duck the echo with the input signal. You can also dial in mechanical noise and tape degradation. Space Delay costs €100. Next,…

Hypertron Roman Fischer’s Hypertron takes inspiration from samplers, sequencers and drum machines from the past. It has a pad-based workflow and lets you compose, mix and arrange in one window. Load, record, slice and timestretch samples, and pitch them in real-time to create melodies. There’s support for Ableton Link, Audiobus and MIDI, and you can export every project track individually so it can be worked on in your DAW. Free, with pro features via in-app purchases. hypertron-instrument.com TTAP “Delay gone deep”, TTAP is a new AUv3 plugin for iPhone/ iPad. While it’s inspired by “adventures with analogue tape,” it can also produce the kind of textural effects you’d only find in the digital domain. TTAP features two buffers, each with shaping controls. There’s also a Section control that determines the maximum time of an…

Amped Studio Bil Bryant CM What does the ‘online studio’ concept offer the professional producer? BB “The mobility of having your projects and sounds available on any computer, anywhere are the obvious benefits. Pro producers often use more than one DAW for specific purposes, and an online DAW can be a complimentary addition for any producer collaborating and in transit. Sketching out and sharing a project as a link that opens the arrangement in your browser is universally accessible.” CM Amped has come on in leaps and bounds. What were the big challenges? BB “We started in PNaCl (Portable Native Client Code) for Chrome and then ported over to WASM (Web Assembly) when it was robust enough for an application like Amped Studio. There are some dependencies with the architecture of browser technologies and standardisations…

SOUNDLOUD Even if you’re just posting snippets on SoundCloud, you still want them to sound as good as possible, so the platform’s new automatic mastering feature – you can select from various options as you upload – seems very handy. On the downside, it costs $4.99 per track. ANIMAL CROSSFADER With Covid-19 sweeping the real world, many have chosen to escape it in Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons life sim. In fact, singer-songwriter Tove Lo even went as far as playing a DJ set in the game, inviting six fans to her island for the show. How sweet. PLUGGED IN AND AMPED Amped Studio hit a major milestone recently, as it became the first browser-based online DAW to support standard VST plugins (as far as we know). The functionality is limited at this stage, but this…
