sunny hues

Light and Airy Furniture-style cabinets in a goldenrod yellow add welcome color that complements the traditional style of this cooking area. Wood tones and a black soapstone countertop help ground the space. SOOTHING SHADES Muted gold hues can function almost as a neutral, bringing subtle warmth to a room. Benjamin Moore; experiencecentury.com Welcome Harmony Using a soft yellow hue throughout the kitchen, left, helps create a cohesive feel in this cooking zone. The cabinet hue is carefully matched to surrounding subway tile, and the light lemony tone pops up again on the upholstered barstools at the island. A Whisper of Color Pale yellow walls bring a soft glow to a light-filled master bath, far right. This easy collaboration grew out of years of friendship —both professional and personal. “I first met Laura when I was decorating houses,” says Dawn, a former real-estate agent and interior designer. After Dawn and her husband, Steve, bought their house in suburban Chicago, she called O’Brien. The two met over coffee and got down to business. “We designed the entire space in three minutes on a napkin,” Dawn says. “The space was spectacular,” O’Brien says. “Architecturally, it required nothing, but everything in the kitchen seemed too small. warm welcome home

Interior designer Deborah Van Plew knew just how to bring this vision to life. With nearly 400 square feet available, Van Plew had room for two large islands— enough work and serving space to make a serious cook weep with joy. Each is topped with exquisite natural stone: honed black granite for the island closest to the range, and crosscut silver travertine for the second island, which includes seating for guests. For the homeowner’s culinary inclinations,…
