welcome to the issue

in the time warp that has been lockdown, July’s rather snuck up on me. But, here we are – officially in summer, and never more deserving of a few months of relief and release. That’s what I hope this Summer Fashion issue of Grazia brings you. Whether you’re staycationing, bracing yourself to cross an airbridge or just head to the park (again), we’ve got a host of smart buys to help you make the most of it. Meanwhile, we’ve also quizzed the professional party planners on how to throw the perfect outdoor party (page 80). And finally, our beauty team tried and tested hundreds of products (tough life!) to discover the 19 hero products worth stocking up on (page 64). Even better? You can win £750-worth of them, too. Good…

For a while now I’ve noticed the snap-opinion culture, of Twitter in particular, and how easy it is to get wrapped in it. It’s refreshing to hear it articulated in such a way, and a reminder of the importance of taking a step back, taking stock and forming your own opinion. I’ve incorporated the phrase ‘I don’t know enough about this subject to have an opinion’ and think this is an incredibly useful tool to have…

EYEBROW RAISING NEWS I so enjoyed your guide to brilliant home-grown niche beauty brands (The Brit Pack, 13 July). Most of these I’d never heard of, so I’d be nervous to try without a recommendation, but they sound amazing. As a brow obsessive, I’ve really missed having mine done – and beauty salons still aren’t allowed to open yet. So I was thrilled to hear about B. Bare’s DIY brow lamination products and have ordered myself a kit! It feels good to be supporting a British brand too. In fact, I really enjoyed your whole ‘best of British’ issue. Even Piers Morgan, now that he seems to have had a personality transplant. Reading his interview, I wanted to say: who are you and what have you done with Piers? Keep the…

"The long-awaited Cumberlege review has found women’s lives have been ruined by three health scandals: vaginal mesh implants, the oral pregnancy test Primodos and the epilepsy drug sodium valproate. Baroness Cumberlege, who led the review, heard women were branded ‘hysterical’, their agony was ignored and their complaints were dismissed as ‘women’s problems’. What makes it more infuriating is that such experiences aren’t uncommon. We know women’s health is taken less seriously than men’s; there’s a long history of trivialising women’s pain and a culture of misdiagnosis. This has to stop. Our pain must be taken seriously from now on."…

the gross, the boastful, the unkempt: my corona crisis bugbears

FIRST DAY OUT of lockdown and back in my local caff (shout out to The Spoke, Holloway Road! My second home, my coffee office, my flat white fam!) is a joyous occasion. I met up with A and R – ‘the usuals’ – and we hug anyway (what the hell!), then assess how much each of us had changed in The Interim. Turns out that among the myriad social graces I’ve abandoned since 23 March is the one that suggests pointing at strangers – while speculating wildly about them, as if they’re oddities on the television who’ll remain blissfully unaware, as opposed to real-time real-lifers, who won’t – might not be a fabulous manoeuvre. R re-names me ‘Pointy Polly’. Then we settle down to the really important business: bitching. ‘Do you know who…
