A CENTURY OF AMERICAN AIRSHOWS The distinctive engine rumble of vintage warbirds! Gravity-defying aerobatics! The sheer speed and performance of modern jet fighters, and a chance to get up close and personal with aviation’s finest. As most Model Airplane News readers know, airshows offer a unique combination of exhilaration and appreciation of history. In “Aviation’s Living History” in this issue, we highlight some incredible U.S. airshows. These great American aviation exhibitions go back to 1910, when the first major U.S. airshow took place at Dominguez Field, just south of Los Angeles. Recall that Wilbur and Orville Wright first flew in 1903, and just seven years later, airplanes had literally and figuratively taken off! The 1910 Dominguez Aviation Meet was highly successful, and it profoundly influenced the future of American aviation—demonstrating monoplanes, biplanes,…

Skyraider Phil Camp, Queensbury, New York Phil spent eight months building this Skyraider from Ziroli plans. It’s powered by a Quadra 75cc gas engine and has Robart retracts, Unilight navigation lights, and a sliding canopy. It has a fiberglass finish, and Krylon camouflage paint and matte overcoat to create the scheme of the Naked Fanny AD-4 Skyraider based in Nakhon Phanom, Vietnam. Phil adds, “She’s one of the best scale warbirds to fly and land: fast in the air, slow and stable on landing. I like how easy she was to detail, finish, and ultimately how she looks in the air!” Albatros D.Va Luis Isaza, Medellín, Colombia This 1/6-scale model was built from Bob Holman plans and replicates the scheme of a plane flown by German WW I ace Paul Baumer. Luis hand-cut all of…

BAG IT Whenever you have to cut a piece of stiff wire to size, a sharp pair of wire cutters makes quick work of the task. However, the end of the wire often ends up flying across the workshop. A good way to prevent this is to simply do your cutting inside a large food freezer bag. Everything stays contained. Also, it goes without saying you should always be wearing safety glasses when working in the shop. Paul Daniels, Phoenix, Arizona SECURE WING BOLTS It happens all the time: You pack up your favorite model and head off to the flying field, when you unload and start to assemble your airplane and find that one or both of the wing attachment bolts are missing! I have found that slipping a snug-fitting O-ring around the…

HSDJETSUSA RC jet jocks have a reason to celebrate: a new U.S. distribution center for HSDJETS just opened in the Fort Worth, Texas area! HSDJETSUSA will sell to individuals and dealers, and the general manager of the new facility is self-proclaimed RC jet fanatic, Andy Davis. Andy also owns RC Jetwerx, and told us he has been flying HSDJET foam turbine and electric jets for years to demo his own products. He is also thrilled to become the U.S. “tech center,” answering customer questions on HSDJET setup, radio programming, and more. HSDJETS are made of EPO foam, and come painted and often with scale details like nav lights and retracts installed. They range from kits (without power and radio system), to plug and play (PNP) with power system and servos installed but…

florida ejet fest international

Imperial RC Club has gained plenty of positive attention in the RC community as the guys in the gold shirts who manage the flightline and pits at events like Florida Jets and Top Gun. Paradise Field at the Lakeland Linder International Airport isn’t their home field, however; that’s actually about 20 minutes away in Mulberry, Florida, where they fly off of a 600-foot paved runway and have pavilions and parking to host large events. The second annual Florida eJet Fest International took place in Mulberry, Florida on February 6 through 9 and attracted 47 registered pilots. The weather was a little sketchy, with high winds accompanying a nasty front coming through during the week, but Friday teased the improving weather and Saturday turned out to be one of the best days…
