the family business

SOUTHERN LIVING sometimes feels like an extended family. This can get complicated depending on which relative you’re dealing with (we have our share of crazy aunts and uncles), but mostly it’s a wonderful bunch of folks who share a passion for Southern culture and a weakness for peach cobbler. Beyond our fun, hardworking Birmingham crew, we have a web of writers, photographers, and stylists who comb the South to bring us stories on food, gardens, small towns, and of course barbecue joints. Then there are those who work on Southern homes, and that’s where the clan gets big. We have networks of custom builders and interior designers, a plant collection, a group of Southern Living Inspired Com-munities, a line of home decor at Dillard’s, and a team selling house plans—all…

patience gets the garden

GARDEN DESIGNER Barbara Katz of Bethesda, Maryland, isn’t a cruel person. She doesn’t tear the wings from flies or push baby robins from the nest. Yet woe betide the impertinent shrub or perennial that’s not up to its assigned task in her garden. “The soil here does not drain well, so lots of things die,” she admits. “I just keep trying new ones.” Repeated failures earn slackers a well-deserved ban. “I am done with delphiniums!” she proclaims. Her experience with this beautiful property proves that despite what novelist Thomas Wolfe wrote, you can go home again. Now the proprietor of London Landscapes, she first designed the gardens here in 1995 for friends who owned the house. Over the years, she continued to work in and refine the beds. One day, she…

“i wanted my home to be an extension of me…”

BUYING A RUN-DOWN split-level rental was not Chelsea Meissner’s original plan. “Due to the high-priced real estate in the area, I realized a fixer-upper was all I could afford. The house was in rough shape—old carpet, cheap finishes, every wall a different color, but I fell in love with the yard’s massive 200-year-old oak trees as soon as I laid eyes on them,” she says. Chelsea, a South Carolina native and cast member on Bravo’s Charleston-based TV show Southern Charm, could envision the potential. The 2,100-square-foot house needed renovations from the ground up. Overwhelmed by where to even start, she strategized with her friend Kim Wolfe, a San Antonio-based designer. “I wanted my home to have character, be welcoming, and feel cozy,” says Chelsea, who broke away from the restrained…

wicker wonder

TAKE A LOOK AT THE PORCHES around your neighborhood. Are many of them dotted with suspiciously similar flower groupings in containers dangling from spindly wires? Bring back old Southern charm by fixing up a woven wicker basket to set yours apart. You’ll need three S-hooks to attach three lengths of chain on opposing edges of a basket that has a wire framework (to shore up the infrastructure). Use another S-hook at the top to loop the chains together, and attach it to the ceiling. Then, plant with a variety of hanging basket essentials: sheet moss and ‘Kimberly Queen’ fern to fill, pink geranium to thrill, and ‘Aqua Marine’ pilea to spill.…

lowcountry beauty

WHY WE LOVE IT The home pulls you outdoors. In this instance, that’s to the marsh setting of the Idea House (see page 70), but it could easily be to your own backyard. Historical Concepts founder Jim Strickland says, “The water was a big design element. We wanted people to see it as soon as they entered the front door.” To accomplish this, the four-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bath home sprawls out so each of the main rooms (including every bedroom) faces that view. The dining room, kitchen, and living room connect to one another. “It feels so good because the plan is very balanced,” says Strickland. WOW FACTOR This house is classic and familiar with a lighthearted, old Southern spirit that’s inspired by the Victorian vernacular of nearby Fernandina Beach, Florida. At first glance, it…
