there’s no business like the audio show business

With this year’s Consumer Electronics Show behind us, readers of our on-line show reports know the sad truth: that the largest industry-only technology show in North America attracted even fewer “high-performance” audio exhibits in 2019 than it did in 2018. The phrase “CES is dead” is now a mantra, and no one should be surprised if this year’s poor showing proves to be the final nail in CES’s coffin as far as high-end audio is concerned.Last year also saw the number of exhibits decline at two regional audio events: the California Audio Show (to be held July 26–28, 2019, Oakland Airport Hilton) and the New York Audio Show (November 8–10, 2019, Manhattan’s Park Lane Hotel). On the other hand, a new audio show surfaced in Florida. With promises of “The…

Accuracy vs musicalityEditor:Re: “As We See It” in January (“If Either of These Amplifiers Is Right …,” p.3), if a component that measures as poorly as the Cary CAD-805RS amplifier is as pleasurable to listen to as Art Dudley claims, then the measurements must not be measuring the factor most crucial to music. —Laszlo Benczelaszlo@laszlophoto.comAccuracy vs PicassoEditor:After reading John Atkinson’s “As We See It” in the January 2019 issue (“If Either of These Amplifiers Is Right …”), and carefully reading and studying the reviews of the Cary Audio CAD-805RS monoblock power amplifier and the Cambridge Audio Edge A integrated amplifier, as well as the analysis of the DeVore Fidelity Orangutan O/93 loudspeaker in Follow-Up, the title should have been “Are the Tests Wrong or Is the Reviewer Wrong?” or “Do…

POLAND: WARSAWPaul MessengerThe Audio Video Show, held each November in Warsaw, might be the second-largest in Europe after High End, in Munich, and each year it continues to grow. In 2018, AVS broke its records for numbers of exhibitors, exhibit rooms, and attendees, and despite its dates clashing with those of the Warsaw Motor Show and the Tokyo International Audio Show, the latter resulting in key A/V-company personnel being thin on the ground in Warsaw in 2018. Happily, there will be no such clash in 2019.The Polish audio market seems particularly buoyant right now. AVS 2018 reminded me of the US and UK hi-fi shows I attended in the 1970s and ’80s, such were the crowds, including many family groups. However, AVS seems unlikely to take over from High End,…

a cartridge cornucopia and two phono preamps

Lately, there’s been too much gear worth covering and not enough space to cover it in. So this time … less think-piece filler and more hardware!GRADO LABS LINEAGE EPOCH MONO CARTRIDGEThe Lineage Epoch Mono is based on Grado’s stereo Epoch, which I reviewed in my December 2017 column, and to which it looks identical. According to John Grado, who hand-builds each one, while the stereo version has one pair of coils per channel, the mono version has just a single pair of coils, configured to pick up a single channel; the resulting signal is then fed to both outputs. Grado says that great care is taken to ensure that the signals appearing on both pairs of output pins are “absolutely equal. The per-channel specifications listed on Grado’s website for the stereo…

life at 100

According to the 2018 edition of the UN’s World Happiness Report, Denmark is the third-happiest nation on Earth, trailing only its neighbors Finland and Norway.I heard that yesterday afternoon, on NPR. The reporter even spelled out the word used by Danes to describe their feelings of happiness: hygge. Apparently, at present, Denmark is positively rotten with hygge. But I was uncertain that I’d heard correctly. And I was dubious that the UN publishes such a thing as a World Happiness Report. I’d been listening to the radio while driving through Troy, New York (where hygge appears to be on back-order), so when I got home I did a Google search on Denmark-happy-hygge. Turns out it’s all true. Even Oprah has been to Denmark in recent weeks, to report on the record…
