snooping around a pro’s kitchen

We know professional chefs can cook and bake, but have you ever wondered what tools they use to help them achieve such successful results? We visited Chef Anna Olson’s newly renovated kitchen to find out what she uses to create and present the beautiful recipes we see in her cookbooks, television shows and on her hugely popular Oh Yum YouTube recipe channel. It turns out Canada’s favourite baking sweetheart is more than happy to dish out her trade secrets. In her own words, here’s what Anna advises to get you baking like a pro. 01 Cool it “I LOVE HOW EASY IT IS TO REACH ITEMS QUICKLY WHEN ENTERTAINING by using the deep door shelf without having to open the whole fridge. It’s also easy to check when I might be low…

seven classic bathrooms

LOOK 01 FEMININE TOUCHES Cool dove grey walls bring a soft, dreamy spa-like serenity to this master bath. The key to classic here is the trad panelling and cornice moulding that signal the room relies on architectural detail for its timeless appeal. A built-in etagérè-like cabinet affords ample storage and display – so French! And the Caesarstone vanity top stands up to hot hair irons, makeup and all the assorted lotions and potions we love. Sweet dreams indeed! LOOK 02 A FINE VINTAGE Vintage elements like the vanity, with its detailed moulding, footed design and glass drawer pulls, mark the room as classic, as does the marble. But strong modern lines in the chandelier, bath fixture and accessories bring a touch of today into the elegant space. The free-standing curved bathtub adds lovely luxury, while…

seven modern kitchens

LOOK 01 WARM WELCOME With the sliding door as a primary entrance for kids and unloading groceries, this kitchen was made for multifunctionality. The pantry wall is packed with storage and even includes a narrow coat closet for outerwear beside the fridge. A mash-up of materials gives the space a dynamic edge. The range hood is made of rich walnut, the scalloped backsplash is ceramic, the faucet and hardware are brass and the sleek countertops are durable Caesarstone. Classic blue and white is welcoming. LOOK 02 STORAGE STORY Soaring ceilings in this loft-like space allow for maximizing vertical storage. The unfussy cabinetry is almost Zen-like in appeal, but a beautiful wood grain adds interest. Its warm tones play off the cool marble backsplash and white cabinetry elsewhere. A Persian runner adds pattern, colour and an…

bathrooms the hottest trends

BLACK IS BACK IN BATHROOM DECOR, AND NOT JUST IN POWDER ROOMS. 1 DARKER, DRAMATIC decor Très chic bathrooms and powder rooms incorporate black. Black adds a luxe look, even when using not too pricey products, making it an easy and affordable way to upscale the room. Worried that dark colours will make your bathroom look smaller? Don’t be. When all the surfaces are dark, there is less delineation of space and the opposite effect occurs – they can seem larger. HOW TO USE THIS TREND: If you’re going to go dark on more than two or three surfaces, go all dark – floors, walls, tiles, even the ceiling. This camouflages the room’s dimensions and makes it hard to visually determine its size. 2 Luxury BIDETS INTELLIGENT AND LUXURY TOILETS ARE AN INVESTMENT. Not since the…

nine modern bathrooms

LOOK 01 DRAMATIC Leaning heavily into pattern and adding three-dimensional artwork makes this bath a modern masterpiece. Boldly mixing medallion floor tiles with elongated black tiles laid in a vertical herringbone pattern – emphasized by the white grout –offers an exciting wow effect. Providing proper balance, the vanity plays the minimalist card with its lacquered drawers and white marble countertop. LOOK 02 LUXE HOTEL The big faux marble tiles and dashes of black give this bathroom predominantly modern, minimalist vibes. The vanity features a laminated wood with an oaky grain that warms up an otherwise cool, monochrome situation. The medicine cabinet’s built-in LED strip lighting offers much welcomed localized illumination. The floor-to-ceiling tile and huge walk-in shower communicate luxury hotel at first glance. LOOK 03 OPEN-CONCEPT This open-concept bathroom was inspired by New York City’s 1 Hotel Central…

six classic kitchens

LOOK 01 SOPHISTICATED In this spacious kitchen, blue is a fresh accent colour with the window’s whimsical cloud-print Roman shades. Warmth is introduced through wood and texture. Shaker-style cabinetry, white subway tiles with grey grout and brass fixtures and pendant lights lend classic appeal that feels chic and inviting. The adjacent eat-in area delivers a bold punch with an ultra-durable deep blue vinyl banquette cushion that picks up on the cloud fabric. LOOK 02 CLASSIC ANGLES The centrepiece of this open-plan kitchen features warm, whimsical modern chevron panelling alongside the appliance wall. A fusion of classic details with contemporary twists pulls the look together, with warm grey custom cabinetry keeping the design from straying too far from its classic roots. LOOK 03 SAVE & SPLURGE A little went a long way in this kitchen reno. Money was saved…
