welcome

We’re featuring two very different yachts this month, created with surprisingly similar aims. Irimari is the new flagship from Sunrise Yachts, a 63-metre for private family use, and she’ll be heading to the Indian Ocean for the winter (see page 46). Storm is the latest ocean-ready creation from Cantieri delle Marche, a go-anywhere 33-metre with an enviable list of voyages to come: Caribbean, Nova Scotia, Panama Canal (see page 80). What the yachts share are owners who understand the unique experiences that are available to them, their families and friends aboard their own vessel. "We plan to take Irimari round the world and discover places that are more remote,” her owner says. We look forward to following these two handsomely bespoked yachts as they create their own adventures. On the subject…

mark cavendish

This is a good time to be a sales director at Heesen Yachts, with a product that is increasingly in demand, the sales showing a consistent pattern of growth, and plenty of ideas for future development. For Heesen’s director of sales and marketing Mark Cavendish, who has become something of a company figurehead over the past few years, things are going smoothly. Not for nothing does he say: "I have one of the best jobs in the business!” Like many who can claim veteran status in the industry, a love of water came early and yet progress wasn’t always smooth. He was born in London but the family moved to Somerset when he was a youngster, where he was introduced "to the sea down the road”. "My parents bought a 15ft…

irimari

You don’t have to be aboard Irimari long to appreciate the characterful and one-off elements that hallmark her as a personal and private yacht. There are the quirks of the layout, with a VIP as part of the owner’s area forward and the formal main-deck dining table located immediately as you enter the salon space from the deck. There is the unusual use of copper in the interior as a keynote colour. And there is the unusual name, too - neither a wandering tribe from the Kalahari, nor a grand Latin adjective, but a combination of family members’ names. It’s a surprise to remember that this 63-metre is Sunrise Yachts’ new flagship, with only two 43-metre yachts launched so far. The boldness and competence of execution suggests a yard that has…
