A bracing dip in the sea on a cold spring morning isn’t my idea of fun but as I arrive at Clevedon’s Marine Lake, many others seem to disagree. Marine Lake is known as the world’s largest seawater infinity pool, but I’m not here for the views across the Bristol Channel. Instead, I’m joining photographer Cat Wynn, a keen outdoor swimmer who loves to incorporate this passion into her product and lifestyle shoots. It’s just after lunchtime and Cat informs me that the water temperature is a pleasant 11C, not that I’m intending to find out for myself. The cold dominates the conversation as ladies’ swim group Almost Synchro begin to arrive. As they gather in a small circle around Cat, she attaches her Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM lens…

Shooting a single subject can be hard enough, but photographing larger groups of people requires lots of planning ahead. To get everyone on board, Cat gathered the group together and ran through her plans for the afternoon. The key factor was to allow everyone to prepare for being in the water. Due to the cold temperatures, time in the water was limited so Cat had to work quickly and accurately to get the shots she needed. When working in or around water (even with competent swimmers) there are always risks involved, especially when moving quickly from shot to shot. So this was also a good opportunity for Cat to make sure everyone was aware of their surroundings and always kept safe.…
