Photographer: David Yarrow Location: Simien Mountains, Northern Ethiopia Equipment: Nikon D850, AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.4E ED Situation: When I traveled to the spectacular Simien Mountain range in Northern Ethiopia, I traveled light as intuitively I knew that I only needed to take my “go-to” 28mm wide-angle lens. I knew that the views are so majestic and biblical from the 12,000-foot peak of the escarpments that any image that didn’t convey this narrative would fail. My research has repeatedly told me that with the right local guide, the gelada baboon would not only be found with ease but also that proximity wouldn’t be an issue. When we think of black-and-white photography, the first images that come to mind are the iconic landscapes of photographers like Ansel Adams or the candid, photojournalistic scenes of everyday life captured by Henri Cartier-Bresson. We don’t typically think of wildlife photography in black-and-white; as a genre, its subjects are usually revealed in full color. So for this year’s Black & White issue, we make a departure from convention to showcase the awe-inspiring monochrome wildlife images of acclaimed photographer David Yarrow. Sunrays On Yosemite Valley Morning Fog By Jeff Sullivan “Spring rain and cooling temperatures can create ground fog in Yosemite Valley, so I picked Tunnel View for sunrise on this morning. Dozens of people were present, but when the sun became visible behind clouds without color, everyone left. Seeing a gap in the clouds, I held my workshop participants there. Sure enough, light rays soon burst forth! THE NIKON D6 IS COMING SOON Nikon has announced the development of a new flagship DSLR, the D6. Details of the successor to the D5—Nikon’s top-of-the-line professional camera released in 2016—were very limited at the time of this writing, with Nikon merely stating that the camera is in development. Nikon notes that 2019 is the 20th anniversary of the introduction of the D1, so it’s likely that more details on the D6 will be made public by year’s end. Along with the D6, Nikon also announced development of a new F Mount pro telephoto zoom lens, the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR.
