NOT TOO LONG AGO I WAS TALKING TO A LOCAL ARTIST WHO HAD RECENTLY CHANGED PATHS. Although she’d been working professionally in a creative field for years, she had pushed her personal artwork to the back burner. That’s something many of us do: our jobs and our daily lives often take priority over our artistic fulfillment. While my friend was able to support herself as a designer, her career didn’t feed her soul. It wasn’t until she listened to her inner voice urging her to make time for her art that she continued her journey as a painter in earnest. I think I bought out most of the stores in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (leaving one for your readers though in each store!). Albert Feldman has been quilting for 14 years. He designs quilting patterns and uses a computerized embroidery machine to quilt his designs. Most of his work emphasizes quilting rather than piecing. His quilts have been exhibited at Mancuso, American Quilter’s Society, Sacred Threads, and many local quilt shows. at Quilt National 2011, Daphne Taylor’s piece “Quilt Drawing #13—for Maureen” stopped me in my tracks. The play of light on the off-white silk was amazing. The design was simple, yet so powerful. (The piece was awarded a Juror’s Award.) ever since I was a child I have collected certain small things that bring me comfort. I have kept boxes and bowls filled with my tiny treasures … seashells and rocks found along the water’s edge, colorful beads and vintage buttons, and bits of lovely fabric. And so it seemed fitting—in these days when I increasingly worry over the well-being of the world—that I turn to some of these humble items and marry them together, thus creating objects of comfort. These objects are talismans of sorts, full of good mojo and calming energy. For the talismans shown here, I used hard shell fragments found along the beaches of Cape May, New Jersey.
