what’s your favourite custom 4x4?

THERE’S nothing like owning a new car and, while I’ll never be able to afford one, I’m lucky enough to get to drive more of them than most folks. What becomes apparent the more you drive new vehicles straight off the showroom floor is how much of a compromise they all are. When car companies design, engineer, manufacture and sell a new vehicle, it has to be made to meet many criteria and few new cars are specialised. Even in the world of four-wheel drives the new models have to meet standards of efficiency, comfort, safety, quietness and on-road performance. Few actually put off-road ability or load hauling as a priority, so you need to go to a specialised model for that. The popular one-tonne mid-size double-cab utes are the biggest compromise,…

the predator

THE 2021 Ram TRX slots Chrysler’s supercharged Hemi V8 in to the 1500 truck to take on Ford’s turbocharged V6-powered F150 Raptor! When the chance arose to get our hands on an engineering vehicle for some seat time, we jumped on it as swiftly as a T-Rex scooping up a Velociraptor snack from the forest floor. Standing eight inches wider at the shoulder than a base Ram 1500 pickup, the stocky stance of the TRX is immediately identifiable. This truck means business! The grille, functional hood scoop and extra vents cut into the front ’guards behind the front wheels to draw air away from the engine bay amplify the aggressive appearance. Down below are functional rock rails, front and rear tow hooks, and a burly set of Goodyear Wrangler Territory 325/65/R18 AT 35in…

hummer reborn

GMC has officially laid bare its all-new Hummer EV, with the fully electric, open-air pick-up boasting some serious off-road nous. “We had one goal for Hummer EV: Build the most capable factory truck – ever,” said Al Oppenheiser, GMC Hummer EV chief engineer. “It’s an absolute off-road beast with a unique e4WD system that provides manoeuvrability unlike anything GM has ever offered before.” The Hummer will launch with the Edition One version, which features a removable roof and lots of extra specs, and which is expected to cost around US$113,000 (A$160,000). But don’t bank on getting one because all of the Edition One models have already been pre-sold in the USA. GM estimates this three-motor e4WD system can deliver 1000hp (745kW) and an astonishing 11,500lb-ft of torque (15,600Nm), with the system kept alive via…

AS SOME state borders open while others remain closed, events that were postponed or in doubt are coming back online, so it’s time to get out and about to enjoy this great land and support the communities. The situation is still fluid and things are changing all the time, so please check with event organisers before locking in your plans. MOUNTAIN CATTLEMEN’S GET TOGETHER The Mountain Cattlemen’s Association of Victoria (MCAV) usually holds a Get Together at a High Country location each year in January. The 2020 Get Together was cancelled due to the bushfires, and the MCAV was hoping to be back in January 2021 but due to COVID were unable to lock in a date. However MCAV hopes to make the event happen later in the year. So watch the…

new direction

MAZDA has said goodbye to Ford after its decades-long partnership creating utes and other light commercial vehicles, and embarked on a new era, this time teaming up with Isuzu for its new BT-50 ute. While the earlier Ford/Mazda one-tonne utes were primarily developed and built by Mazda and then rebadged as Ford products, the last generation of the partnership was primarily developed by Ford (in Australia) with input from Mazda, then reskinned and badged as BT-50s. The new BT-50 is essentially a reskinned D-MAX, and that is the all-new 2020 D-MAX which launched just a few months before the BT-50 hit the market. Mazda is banking on Isuzu’s reputation for engineering strong, reliable vehicles and class-leading levels of safety technology in sharing the D-MAX’s platform, while wrapping it in stylish sheet-metal…
