MEET Heath This issue’s featured pet is Heath, a heroic 3-year-old English shepherd service dog who lives in Tehachapi, California, with his proud mama, Kim Snyder. “Heath is my service dog. His training began at eight weeks, and he is constantly learning how to help. He brings me my meds each morning, helps with laundry, hands me things I drop, and even helps me undress. He also brings me things on request, interrupts me if I become anxious, and provides medical alert. The bond between us is very powerful. We were only separated once when I was in surgery, but he was in the recovery room waiting. Heath has given me back my independence and changed my life. He’s my angel in a fur coat.” —Kim Snyder…

bring on the berries

GOLDEN-BERRIES Also known as Cape gooseberries, these South American delights are yellow-orange in color and have a sweet, slightly citrusy, slightly vegetal flavor, similar to a cherry tomato. They’ve been cropping up more widely in American supermarkets. Try them as a snack or as a surprising addition to salads or cheese boards. MORE BERRIES TO TRY Check farmers markets and local grocers for these and other berries that may grow where you live. In recipes, most berries are interchangeable. Just sweeten to taste to account for variations in tartness. BOYSENBERRIES Created by crossing European blackberries and raspberries with American dewberries and loganberries, these resemble large blackberries and have a sweet-tart taste and beautiful deep purple color. They are terrific in jams and pies. GOLDEN RASPBERRIES A yellow version of red raspberries, these have a mild, sweet flavor.…
