Gail Potocki: Giver and Taker Finding beauty within the darkness is a theme that runs throughout Gail Potocki’s symbolist paintings. Using a strong female figure as the protagonist, her “subjects are led into temptation and made to pay for the mistakes of all mankind; absorbing the world’s transgressions, folding punishment into flesh,” explains Galerie Fledermaus, which represents the artist. Giver and Taker is a prime example of these dichotomies. The painting is included in Potocki’s hardcover book The Union of Hope and Sadness.…

For the past 22 years, the Boston International Fine Art Show has been one of the mainstay fairs for modern, contemporary and historic works of art. Every year, thousands of visitors head through the doors of The Cyclorama at Boston Center for the Arts to view exhibitions curated by 40 galleries from the United States and Europe. This year’s show, held October 24 to 27, adds the contemporary art section “Emerge,” dedicated to individual artists and galleries specializing in emerging and mid-career artists. Leading the Emerge section is Principle Gallery, which has locations in Alexandria, Virginia, and Charleston, South Carolina, with work by artists such as Michele Kortbawi Wilk and Kim VanDerHoek on display.
