Welcome to another fine issue of APC, and the exciting world of technology we cover. This month there’s a bit of housekeeping to attend to. We’ve needed to bump up the cover price by a dollar, beginning with this issue. Increasing costs have forced this, and we’ve held it off as long as we possibly could – indeed the last time APC saw a price rise was way back in 2012. It’s now an unavoidable necessity and we all thank you for your understanding, and continued support. It’s important to note that this only applies to copies sold at Australian newsstands – our subscriber price remains unchanged, and that’s always the best value way to get APC. If you hadn’t considered a subscription before, it’s the cheapest way to get the print…

inside apc

APC is Australia’s oldest consumer technology magazine – having been consistently in print for forty years, since our first issue way back in May 1980 – and we take that heritage and responsibility very seriously. While our focus is obviously on the personal computer the very definition of the PC has changed and shifted markedly since the early 1980s. As such, we touch on many other areas of tech, too, from smartphones and apps to peripherals, accessories, and beyond. We have two goals: to find the best modern tech and to help you make the most of it. We’re also an open church in terms of platforms. We know most people aren’t wed to a single brand’s products and use a variety of devices. And, like you, APC’s journalists want to…

toshiba officially steps away from pc market

In a press release announcement Toshiba has come forward with news that the company is officially stepping away from the PC manufacturing market. For decades, Toshiba has been a global competitor in the PC industry, going as far as introducing one of the first commercially available laptops in the 1980s. Over the last few years, however, Toshiba has been slowly removing assets – including major shares in its PC business. In June of 2018, Toshiba relinquished over 80% of its PC subsidiary shares to Sharp, which rebranded Toshiba Client Solutions Co., Ltd under Dynabook. Since the purchase, Toshiba has still maintained ownership of the remaining 19.9%. As of early August, Toshiba has officially sold that remaining stake, giving complete ownership of the PC business to Sharp under the Dynabook name. This move also…

internet explorer 11, legacy edge losing microsoft support in 2021

After years of compatibility, Microsoft devs have decided to drop Internet Explorer 11 support for various Microsoft 365 applications, starting with Teams. This announcement was first posted on the Microsoft 365 blog. The new changes go into effect on November 30th, 2020 beginning with Microsoft Teams. By August 17th, 2021 (a year to-the-date from the announcement) all of the remaining Microsoft 365 apps will no longer provide support for IE 11. Anyone using Internet Explorer 11 to connect to Microsoft 365 apps after the dates listed above will encounter serious degradation in performance. Some features may stop working entirely. While users can no longer use IE 11 for these apps and services, they can use Microsoft Edge’s Internet Explorer mode.…

intel xe hpg gaming gpu: taking on amd and nvidia

The reveal of the Intel Xe HPG during Intel’s Architecture Day 2020 was part of a virtual firehose of information on a ton of upcoming products and technologies. One of the products we’re most interested in seeing and testing is Intel’s Xe Graphics. Intel originally had plans for a single graphics architecture with two micro-architectures back in 2018. Two years later, the number of microarchitectures has doubled to four. Xe LP is for integrated graphics and entry-level solutions, Xe HP is for high-end compute and data centre workloads, and Xe HPC is basically Xe HP on steroids, targeting supercomputing exascale solutions. That leaves the fourth and final microarchitecture that Intel just announced: Intel Xe HPG, which will be the heart of the consumer card. Given what we know of Xe HP, the…
