UNEQUIVOCAL LOVE Is your family like mine where we love to lug out the boxes of family pictures as we have coffee and dessert after a family gathering? Ninety percent of the contents are black-and-white photos, often with edges that resemble a doily. They’re predominantly images of relatives who are sitting around a table at a family gathering, perhaps getting ready to lug out boxes of family pictures. We languish over the same boxes year after year, but somehow, there’s always a unique nuance that dominates or averts our attention in a way it hadn’t before. Some are too faded to make out, some are stuck together. Most unfortunately don’t have dates, but that makes it all the more fun to try and calculate what year it was by that infamous sofa or…

designers’ show house

A celebrated mansion in Detroit’s historic Boston-Edison district became the setting for the 2018 Junior League Show House donated by actor, author and philanthropist Hill Harper from television’s “CSI:NY” and “The Good Doctor,” benefitting the Junior League of Detroit. Merging the old and the new, forty distinguished interior designers transformed the mansion’s 18,000 square feet to its original majestic grandeur with a modern twist. Imported European fireplaces, black walnut paneled walls, carved wooden chinoiserie medallions and rare Flint Faience tiles are just a few of the opulent details. I felt my job was not to necessarily “rewrite it,” but rather to add a new chapter.…

DREAM OF VENICE IN BLACK AND WHITE Introduction by Tiziano Scarpa Edited by JoAnn Locktov Bella Figura Publications • $26.99 The first thing to know about JoAnn Locktov, who edited this book and two previous Dream of Venice volumes, is that she calls herself a Venetophile – a lover of Venice. “I fell in love the moment I first experienced it in 1996. Through the years, I’ve seen Venice struggling, with tourism taking precedence over residents,” she laments. “We need to declare it as a relevant, living city. About 30 million visitors go every year. “My goal is to create an alternative to the typical guidebooks offering the same landmarks, photographed the exact same way. I want my books to remind people of what we risk losing in this beguiling place,” she adds. “Dream of…

don freeman / my familiar dream

Stepping into The Gilded Owl gallery in Hudson, New York – it takes a minute to process the eye-feast of art, furniture and objet. The walls reveal a fascinating, stunning show by Don Freeman: “My Familiar Dream / 1992-2018.” Best known for his lyrical, painterly works of still life and architecture, Freeman is a celebrated American photographer splitting his time between New York City and the Catskill Mountains. From his explorations into hand-toned, monochromatic images to his works utilizing architectural blueprinting, he constantly pushes the envelope on what a photograph can be. Enamored with the large, unyielding petals of chrysanthemums and roses, the kind he saw in Japanese woodblock prints and fabrics, Freeman befriended neighboring upstate-New York gardeners and was moved to try his hand at backyard floriculture; steps that were the…

the cutting edge

1 MARINA CHEBAN Cheban Interiors aims to create an emotional connection between client and home in clean, modern settings with a funky twist. Location: Hoboken, NJ Square footage: 200 sq. ft. Style: Modern “This was a gut remodel, and my inspiration for the design was the stone that we chose for the surfaces. I wanted something that said high luxury but was still user-friendly. That is exactly what I found in the leathered-finish granite on the island that really laid the foundation for the rest of the design. For an element of fun and movement, I came up with the swing idea as a way to accentuate the 11-foot ceiling height. I didn’t want to go with the traditional chandelier option; I wanted to make this kitchen memorable and the swings added that and a…
