It seems astonishing to me that the first issue of Vogue I edited was published five years ago this month. Granted it was December 2017, the latter half of a different decade, before 60 months of living history at what felt like warp speed. Yet it really does seem like a lifetime ago, not least because of the level of change we’ve all witnessed in the world of fashion and beyond. I’m not especially given to looking back – what’s next will always grab my attention – but pausing for a moment, it is heartening to look through the pages of this issue here in my office at Vogue House and see a magazine that, I hope, feels effortless in its representation. What do a white tank top and a chubby gold heart looped on a velvet ribbon have in common? How about a bomber jacket and a length of chunky chain? They are all archetypes of the clothing and jewellery world, and symbols within the Prada universe, which the Italian label has chosen to reinterpret, challenge and subvert. The heart, the chain, the snake: all motifs central to Eternal Gold, Prada’s first collection of fine jewellery that, according to the brand’s jewellery director, Timothy Iwata, aims to give “contemporary meaning and relevance to classic shapes”. It’s Thursday night on 21 April 1977 and Bianca Jagger is in the throes of a wardrobe crisis. Preparing for a drinks party at a SoHo loft in Manhattan, escorted by Andy Warhol and Interview editor Bob Colacello, she’s discovered she’s underdressed for the occasion. “Bianca came down in a white cotton skirt and blue blouse, but then looked at us dressed so formal and went back up and put on a gold-and-black lamé dress and gold shoes,” Warhol wrote in his diary.
