Here’s something you probably never considered: the smallest, most compact items in our wardrobe – bathing suits – can have a major impact on the environment. How so? Most swimwear today is made of virgin nylon, a petroleum-based material (plastic, essentially) that never biodegrades. Scientists have also discovered that when petroleum-based fabrics (polyester included) are washed, they emit plastic microfibres. These microfibres are not visible to the naked eye, but they are now in our seas, rain, Arctic ice and, yes, fish. Happily, there are stylish solutions to reduce the impact. One is to embrace circularity, which means buying swimsuits made of regenerated nylon. One of the leading manufacturers is the Italian company Aquafil: it transforms old nylon carpets, abandoned fishing nets and ocean and landfill plastic waste into a regenerated…

Simon Porte Jacquemus’s shows have included sport-centric pieces such as scuba gear, hiking boots and swimwear, but when his models walk the Paris runways in late June, they will be playing a whole new game. Nearly three years in the making, Jacquemus’s debut collaboration with Nike marries the designer’s love of the outdoors and his body-conscious aesthetic with Nike’s expertise in making some of the most technically advanced activewear in the world. “Sport was always super important in the Jacquemus DNA,” says the designer, noting that his 2014 and 2015 collections were grounded by sneakers. “But as Jacquemus grew, the Jacquemus girl changed – she got heels!” Still, something lingered in his mind. “I always said to myself, ‘If one day I do a collaboration, it will be with Nike.’” The American…
