I am trapped in a time warp. At this time of year, it’s traditional to look back over the past 12 months and reminisce about the rides we’ve done and the tales we’ve told. Except I’m aware that most of the rides we did during 2019 have yet to appear in the pages of this magazine. They are in the past but they still haven’t happened yet. Take this month’s ride. Just as the bike market had finally agreed on a definition for ‘endurance road’, along came BMC in 2016 and rewrote the rulebook with its first Roadmachine. Gone was the sit-up-and-beg position and focus on comfort over speed; in came racier geometry, sleek integration and aerodynamic tube profiles. ‘Our engineers have always been performance-focussed, so they had a different idea of what an “endurance” bike should be compared to most other brands back then,’ says BMC product manager Stefano Gennaioli. ‘We created the Roadmachine to prove endurance bikes no longer had to be the soft option but could still be just as rideable.’ Four years later, the new model looks broadly similar to the old one, hinting that it is a refinement rather than a total overhaul. ‘This is definitely an evolution,’ says…

However, thanks to its experience making helmets in the automotive arena, the Italian brand has come straight into the cycling market with some impressive technology. Look closely and you’ll spot the greyscale beauty of woven carbon fibre on the outside of the helmet. This is the Motiv Air’s ‘exoCarbon’ shell, a carbon fibre skeleton that sits under the more conventional polycarbonate exterior. The thinking behind its inclusion is that it gives the helmet a stronger outer structure, so that it is less likely to break apart during a crash. £1,379, huntbikewheels.com There are three reasons you might want carbon spokes on a set of wheels, namely that they are stiffer, lighter and look rather slick. Hunt’s 36 UD wheels have the first two covered, but when it comes to the third reason, you could be forgiven for thinking that these are normal steel spokes. The spokes are held in place mechanically, rather than the carbon being bonded to the rim as on wheelsets from the likes of Lightweight or Corima. We haven’t seen this approach before, but it has advantages in terms of bike maintenance in that they can be trued or replaced just like a standard spoke.
