why print matters

The publishing world has taken quite a hit over the past couple of years. Many titles have ceased to exist or have migrated to online platforms. While change is inevitable, a thought stirred in my mind: What is it that makes print great? This brought me back to why I launched DAMAN in the first place. For one, I wanted to give readers in-depth and thoughtfully crafted stories about one of my passions: fashion. This would then extend to cover lifestyle in a more general sense. Finally, I sought to inspire through celebrities and other public figures that are, well, inspiring.Perhaps that is exactly why print matters … and why it will go on.It’s not about the amount of stories we run. It has always been about quality, along with the…

OPEN MY COLLARGrab a cigar and get ready for steamy salsa beats, because this season’s must have item will bring you all the way to Havana. The Cuban collar shirt is the comeback kid of menswear. The guayabera, as it was originally known, had an open collar that is instantly recognizable and a straight hem that was designed to be worn untucked. The best thing about these collars is it makes narrow shoulders look broader. In 2019, combine yours with a linen jacket and some slim-fit jeans for a luxe update on an old-school classic.Photography Haruns Maharbina Styling Primawan Hakim Model Manoel Orfanaki ■…

The Suit, and Nothing but the SuitFor the spring/summer 2019 season, the new way to wear a suit is without the shirt. Yes, you should be wearing your suit with absolutely nothing underneath. The trend was everywhere, from the baby-blue two-piece paired with a bare chest at Ermenegildo Zegna to the ultra-chic stone-hued suit shown without a shirt at Hermès. If you’re going to try the trend yourself, be sure to invest in a super-strong six pack, just in case.Ermenegildo ZegnaGiorgio ArmaniHermèsDries Van NotenDunhillRoberto CavalliRoberto CavalliErmenegildo ZegnaVersacePradaBalmainVetementsPerfect PairWhen it comes to easy, relaxed combinations, a great blazer and a humble pair of jeans always does the job. Why is this combination so appealing? Well, jeans and a blazer is a modern classic combination and one that just about anyone can…

Michael B. JordanAll AmericanCoach kicked off 2019 by releasing a smashing spring/summer campaign starring its first global men’s face, Michael B. Jordan. Shot in a desert landscape outside of Los Angeles by Craig McDean, the campaign depicts Jordan on a vintage car, fully dressed in the house’s American silhouettes, wearing either a color block shearling jacket, a blue leather moto or a patchwork leather MA-1 jacket. The spring/summer 2019 campaign launch also coincided with the release of the house’s men’s fragrance campaign, Coach for Man, which was previously fronted by American actor James Franco. In the new campaign, Jordan is seen, again, with a vintage car, this time in a garage. His looks, this time, are more laidback, consisting only of a black T-shirt and jeans, which is meant to…

All in Good FunKim Jones’ first collection for Dior Men was simply outstanding. How he artfully and playfully re-energized the menswear line with a dash of soft elegance, feminine and streetwear influences, as well as some of Dior’s most iconic accessories—the saddle bag, of course—showcases just how good he is in respecting the house’s codes while also bringing them into the presentday. That masterful approach was also present in Dior Men’s summer 2019 capsule collection. Interestingly, Jones commissioned the services of KAWS, an artist known primarily for designer toys, to reimagine Dior’s iconic bee and the Dior name itself in a playful way. He also revisited a 17th century Japanese embroidery technique called boro and applied it to jeans, shirts and blousons with colored threads that are left intentionally visible.…

To Each His OwnOur skin works differently during the day and night. When the sun is up, our skin works to protect itself from environmental factors (UV rays, pollution, etc.), while at night, it works to repair and regenerate itself. That’s why skincare companies offer specialized products for day and night. Creams, gels, oil or serums for the day are usually designed to protect the skin from environmental hazards it’s bound to face. The consistency of these products are also lighter because many people apply makeup during the day. Conversely, night products tend to be richer in texture, stay longer on the skin and contain more active ingredients. Also, night products are usually geared for anti-aging purposes. This, however, does not mean that a night cream is better; it’s just…
