supporting local

The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. “Choices” being the optimal word, especially when what we consume is involved. Most of us move here for the amount of sunny days, mountains, outdoor activities, less humidity, and its world-renowned culinary and beverage options. “Ethical” restaurants are also high on the list. Restaurants that source their ingredients from local farms and gardens can take advantage of the surplus of fresh flavors that these ingredients offer—not to mention the improved nutrition, economy benefits, and ethically responsible mandate that many of us support today. Farm-to-table food is healthier than processed…

creative collab

When two life-long friends with a passion for health and happiness join forces—magic happens. The River Yoga’s owner Danielle Barbeau has once again teamed up with local interior designer Jamie Nusser of J Designs (pictured) to design The River Sunnyside, their third location together after their successful launch of The River Five Points. This time, the mind-body duo wanted to create a cutting-edge studio that not only caters to its yoga clientele, but one that offers a distinct place to reflect, relax, and connect. “The studio is very intentional,” says Barbeau. “We want people to come in and wonder where they are; Am I in a boutique? Am I in a spa? Or, am I walking by the river? It’s a very serene atmosphere and offers a sense of community…

farming from the ground up

After thirteen years of Air Force Reserves and presidency of GS1, Veteran of Desert Storm Sally Herbert changed her life’s course to the joys of growing local produce, but with a twist. While farming within the confines of an urban environment, Sally grew her new company, Altius Farms, from the ground up—literally. Using aeroponic towers, Sally and her farming team have now become a go-to Denver farm for local restaurants, grocery stores, and institutions opting for better flavor and a smaller carbon footprint. How did you get into farming? “I was recently a victim of corporate burnout, so I needed to leave my job and do something different. In 2013, I left the East Coast and moved back to Colorado and started serving on a board of directors of a nonprofit called…

However, we can’t forget the importance of environment. When you go somewhere that’s serene and beautiful—and welcomes you with open arms—you can’t help but feel calm and stressfree, which aids in your overall wellness. The River Sunnyside’s owner Danielle Barbeau says escaping the daily grind allows you to better focus on centering your mind and body. She knew this sentiment would be pertinent when creating her new yoga space, so she decided to enlist close friend and yoga aficionado, Jamie Nusser of J Designs to help. THE LOOK AND FEEL Bringing the outdoors in was a big part of the design. “Everything was done with intention. We wanted to…
