for your consideration…

As I write this in the damp rain-spattered, leaf-strewn days of mid-October, one of the things keeping me going is the prospect of the run-up to Christmas, sparkling just on the horizon. It’s one of my favourite times of the year, packed full of festive get-togethers, vibrant parties and a sense of boundless joy… Even if we’re all rushed off our feet, desperately trying to buy all those presents, plan cocktails for 50 people and source an artisanal Christmas pud, there’s something invigorating about the positive vibes all around. It’s something I feel we all need, this year more than most perhaps. Here at ELLE Decoration, Christmas has always been slightly at odds with the modern minimalistic aesthetic the magazine has sometimes stood for, but this year we wanted to tackle the…

How would you describe your work? ‘I am inspired by the power of simplicity and the imperfection of beauty.’ Tell us about your collaboration with Diptyque ‘Our idea was to create a Christmas with a universal meaning. The three new scents, ‘Protective Pine’, ‘Lucky Flowers’ and ‘Blissful Amber’, are inspired by goodluck charms and end-of-year festivities from around the world – my designs incorporate icons and motifs from these traditions.’ Had you worked with scent as a stimulus before? ‘My work is handmade, so senses are very important. Hopefully, the materials, colour combinations and motifs I’ve used come together to describe the different sensations of the scents in the collection.’ What scent makes you feel Christmas has arrived? ‘The fragrance of fire, wood and wonderful spices such as cinnamon, coming from a pot of slowcooked food, conjure…

Carl Philip Bernadotte [pictured, left], fourth in line to the Swedish throne, and Oscar Kylberg founded their design agency in 2012 and have created pieces for some of the most iconic Scandinavian brands, from bed expert Hästens to Swedish staple Åhléns. But when historic Danish silverware firm Georg Jensen came knocking, the excitement was palpable… How did this collaboration come about? ‘As a Scandinavian designer, you grow up with a strong relationship to Georg Jensen’s designs, so when you get the call from them, the first thing you have to do is calm down,’ says Kylberg, retelling the moment the 115-year-old silverware brand contacted the pair with a very open brief to create a new coffee or tea product. The result is the ‘Helix’ collection (above), a small family of pieces that…
