editor-in-chief’s letter

TALK TO ME As I get older, I find myself repeating the same thing every December around this time: ‘This year has been a roller-coaster ride, hasn’t it?’ And you can bet your bottom dollar that I’m not alone in feeling this. In my case, I started my new job as Editor-in-Chief of ELLE, a marvellous adventure, but an all-consuming one too. I hit the ground running and have been in my own thoughts 90% of the time, shamefully ignoring many of my nearest and dearest. My boyfriend even found a new hangout buddy in the form of a bicycle. We’re constantly told to slow down, but at the pace the world is spinning, that might not be an option. More important is how we can keep…

summer’s going swimmingly

Barbara Polo, Witchery Womenswear Design Manager, gives a five-minute lowdown on the latest swimwear collection What inspired this range? A square neckline top is a key silhouette style for swimwear. Another option is the rash vest, which is stylish and functional for a day at the beach. Tips for wearing bold colours? For daytime dressing, I suggest wearing dark printed pieces with denim shorts. By night, pair them with eveningwear staples. Very popular now are berry tones, which make you feel beautiful in the…

label to know: 5-knot

In a fashion cycle so fast-paced and ever-changing, 5-Knot stands out through its creators’ consistent and transcendent collections inspired by the past – a rather refreshing approach. Husband-and-wife team Ena and Taketo had their first showing on African soil at AFI Joburg Fashion Week this year, which saw their S/S19 collection stir the local fashion community. Packed with unexpected pairings of prints and textiles, the garments ironically challenge classicism by updating vintage ideas for the modern woman. The brands’ creators describe it with the words ‘trip’ and ‘vintage’, speaking to the ease and simplicity of their intricate designs. This idea extends from their own laid-back lifestyle in a coastal area of Japan, where their days are filled with eating, surfing and creating. ‘The way we create is the same way…
