editor’s letter

“WE HAVE a RESPONSIBILITY to be OPTIMISTIC ” — MICHELLE OBAMA If you had told me when I was first starting out in magazines that one day I’d be part of a group of Hearst editors given a private audience with the former First Lady of the United States of America, I would not have believed you. In fact, if you’d told me that even a year ago, I still wouldn’t have believed it. And yet, on a sunny September day in New York, that is exactly what I found myself doing. Life really does have a funny way of surprising you sometimes. As we watched the great Michelle Obama being interviewed by Oprah Winfrey onstage at Hearst Towers in Midtown Manhattan, the atmosphere was nothing short of electric. In a room…

guest list

THE ICON OPRAH WINFREY There’s not much Oprah Winfrey can’t do, from hosting a Wonder Woman-themed party last year to attending the most talked about royal wedding in May. She is the ultimate multihyphenate – way before Slashies were even a thing – with her job titles including media executive, actress, producer, host and philanthropist. Having appeared on the TIME 1OO list of influential people an incredible ten times, Oprah is a true 21st-century icon. Oprah talks to Michelle Obama on page 118 THE WRITER LIV SIDALL Writing wasn’t always on the cards for Liv, and it took doing a ‘somewhat disastrous graphic design degree’ for her to find her calling. ‘I got a dream job writing for It’s Nice That and realised enthusiasm sometimes champions knowledge and skill.’ She went on to become the founder…

bring me sunshine

“A PLAYFUL SPIRIT has WEAVED its WAY BETWEEN the YEAR’S POLITICAL STATEMENTS ” JUDGING BY SOME OF THE YEAR’S more memorable hashtags, 2018 has been a year of living our #bestlife, revelling in #self-care and #reclaimingmytime. In other words, finding our #joy — however that looks and whatever that means — in spite of the many reasons out there in the world to get angry. And nowhere has this been more evident than on the runway. In February, there were giant festive hats made of balloons perched atop models’ heads, ready for take-off, at Matty Bovan’s AW18 show, knockout frilled dresses shown in a dinner-party set on Molly Goddard’s runway, and living dolls in glittering wigs floating down the catwalk to boisterous vaudeville music at Comme des Garçons. Then, at the SS19…

the label kwaidan editions

SPEAKING WITH Hung La and Léa Dickely, the husband-and-wife duo behind Kwaidan Editions, you’d never guess their work was inspired by a love of slasher flicks. They’re softly spoken, considerate with their words and their white-walled studio overlooking London’s Regent’s Canal is chilled-out rather than chilling. Until you notice the pinned references on the walls – tear-outs from vintage fetish mags and shots of seedy hotel rooms – which is when their slick neo-noir styling starts to make sense. The label takes its name from the 1964 Japanese horror film Kwaidan (both Hung, who is Vietnamese-American, and Léa, French, are self-proclaimed film buffs). ‘We build scenes or sets in our minds and find clothes to live in them,’ says Léa on their cinematic style. Their protagonist this season is a female…
