we all need the chance to laugh, cry & cheer

As we have been working on this issue of Good Housekeeping, there have been multiple news reports questioning whether or not the Tokyo Olympics will go ahead this summer. I have to confess, I’ve found it particularly nail-biting, having worked with Alex Scott, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan on this fabulous cover shoot and the interview with the three of them about the longed-for summer of sport (page 14). Clearly, no one would want the event to take place if it was likely to result in an increase in Covid-19 cases, but with organisers insisting it can happen in absolute safety, it looks as if we can – one year later than originally planned – settle down to watch all the triumphs and dramas of the world’s greatest sporting event. good times with… mary nightingale

• The last great film you saw… I was knocked sideways by Promising Young Woman – an extraordinary directing debut by Emerald Fennell. Carey Mulligan was mesmerising. • The film you could watch over and over… My all-time favourite is Some Like It Hot starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. I interviewed Jack years ago and was worried he might not live up to my fangirl expectations, but he was wonderful – so funny. • The performance that stayed with you… Tony Bennett at Ronnie Scott’s a few years ago. He was well over 70 then, and utterly compelling. We had a table right by the stage, and he interrupted one of his songs to kiss my hand! I was smitten… • The one you’d tell everyone to see… I’m a huge fan of Hamilton.…

the books that changed my life

THE LAST BOOK THAT MADE ME LAUGH A book that makes me laugh every time is The Best Cat Memes Ever by Charlie Ellis. The captions are hilarious and match the cat pictures so well. THE LAST BOOK THAT MADE ME CRY In Remarkable People, my friend and colleague Dan Walker talks about people he has met during his career that have made a difference to others. It’s humbling to read about the unselfish acts some humans make to ensure others’ lives are better. THE LAST BOOK THAT AFFECTED ME MOST The Tattooist Of Auschwitz by Heather Morris has a romantic thread running through it that I found moving, but the trauma and pain throughout are tangible. The book tells the story of Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew who was a prisoner in Auschwitz. His…

see holland and the floriade expo in spring

On this seven-day river cruise, you will see the best of the Netherlands in bloom as you enjoy a series of spring displays from Amsterdam to Kampen. The highlight of your trip will be a day exploring the Floriade Expo, one of the world’s great floral events, which only takes place once every 10 years. Next year’s Floriade, which will be held in Almere, on the outskirts of Amsterdam, will be a colourful celebration of trees, shrubs, perennials, creepers and bulbs. During this holiday, you’ll also have the chance to enjoy optional excursions to Het Loo Palace, which was built in 1686 for William III; stroll around the themed gardens at De Kruidhof, the largest botanical garden in the Netherlands; and see how Dutch biscuits, such as gevulde koek and speculaas, are…
