GQ HQ is a sea of tuxedos and bow ties and we’re in party mode celebrating our GQ Men of the Year Awards in association with Chivas Regal. By the time you’re reading this, we’ll have handed out our yearly honour roll to 17 stylish, sophisticated and agenda-setting men and one beautiful woman from here and around the world at what has become a glimmering night of nights on the Australian awards calendar. On November 10 at Sydney’s Ivy Ballroom, sportsmen mixed with entrepreneurs, supermodels shimmied with stars of the screen and musicians mingled with emerging young talent to celebrate all that is good in the modern man. Our Men of the Year Awards really are a living, breathing interpretation of what this wonderful GQ brand (which I have the…

KELLY HUME FASHION DIRECTOR Our fashion team got a recent boost thanks to the super-talented Hume, who took the reins just in time for Men of the Year, with no fewer than 13 shoots to prep. “I definitely hit the ground running,” she admits. “We began shooting the week after I started, which has been both incredibly rewarding and highly stressful.” GOT A FAVOURITE SHOOT? The diversity of talent I’ve shot is what I loved the most for this issue, but in terms of my personal aesthetic, I really enjoyed Cody Simpson (p140). His level of fame at such a young age is mind-blowing and shooting him as a modern cowboy felt very appropriate. AGREED. ANY TIPS FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GET INTO STYLING? Interning is a great way to get a foot in the…

STAR LETTER I’ve long been a fan of Bond (and GQ ), and really loved your latest issue. The interview with Daniel Craig was insightful, and I also enjoyed the Léa Seydoux shoot, the Bond travel destinations feature and the Spring Racing guide. Nice work. JAMES, VIA EMAIL Finally! Someone pins down Aziz Ansari. I love this guy! Stoked to hear about his new show on Netflix – I had no idea. Can’t wait. CHRIS, VIA EMAIL I really liked this issue but one thing I’d like to change is the advice section. I would like it to be bigger with more questions please. Thanks guys! HUDSON, VIA GQ.COM.AU I love the Bond films and really enjoyed the interview with Daniel Craig. He’s received a bit of slack for his comments recently but he reinvigorated a dying…

politics and the papacy

I recently found myself caught in the middle of what can only be described as Pope-demonium. I was on my way to dinner with a friend who lives near Central Park in New York. We foolishly scheduled this catch-up at exactly the same time Pope Francis was due to address the faithful in the park. It took half an hour to walk three blocks as a crowd of 80,000 made its way inside at a glacial pace. And in a case of breathtakingly idiotic timing, I attempted the journey home when everybody was leaving. I spent a quarter of my evening swept up in the throng, entirely against my will. When I finally found sanctuary I said to my beer, ‘You can say what you like about the Pope, but he…

callum turner

Model-turned-actor. They’re words typically associated with some busty Victoria’s Secret Angel capable of winning the attention of an eager Hollywood producer. But it’s not just girls who make the transition. Enter Callum Turner, the 25-year-old Londoner who’s swapped Burberry billboards for the big screen. Aussies were first introduced to the talented Mr Turner through murder mystery series Glue, which aired on SBS 2 earlier this year. And there’s plenty more where that came from with no fewer than four feature films on the boil in the next 12 months, including Victor Frankenstein, starring James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe. There’s also his leading role in wartime flick Queen & Country and punk rock drama Green Room, in which he stars alongside Imogen Poots. Next up, though, he’s tackling something more light-hearted: a fresh…
