the editor’s letter

Attends his first men’s Paris fashion week as editor – happens to be the most seminal ever. No coincidences there. While I ponder how my fashion epitaph might one day read, digest this: menswear is growing at a faster rate than womenswear, with the industry set to rack up more than $670bn globally. On that exciting note, welcome to our Big Style Issue. Until now, I’d come to accept that not all men get excited by fashion. Clearly, though, more are into it than are letting on, which is fantastic news because really style is just an extension of your personality. GQ’s role is to do away with any inhibitions and coax out the confidence for you to dress as you wish. The above figure shows we are making decent headway. So, why…

watch this space

From envying his hair and ability to rock an impromptu serenade in 10 Things I Hate About You, to re-watching him over and over as the Joker in The Dark Knight , Heath Ledger will always hold a special place in my cinematic heart. Set up in the late actor’s honour, the Heath Ledger Scholarship means his legacy still lives on today, so it’s with great pleasure we announce GQ Australia will be the media partner for this year’s award. Past winners include GQ favourites Ryan Corr, Bella Heathcote and Mojean Aria and with an all-star judging panel including Matt Damon, Naomi Watts and Elizabeth Debicki, this year is set to be another stellar one. The announcement will be made on September 20 in LA, so be sure to log on to…

I recently finished a series of seven artworks for the Chinese pop star, Chris Lee. Each artwork was for a cover of her live album and a stop on her 2018 tour. Nice. Thoughts on the use of drugs in medical research – hell yes or crazy liberal fantasy? Anything that can potentially save or improve…

the agenda

Young boys, especially during adolescence, are often told to ‘man up’ or to ‘be a man’. They’re told to be tough and not to cry; but the ‘advice’ is usually vague. Typically, if these recommendations are explored a bit further, the idea of being a man is synonymous with aggressiveness, competitiveness, physical and sexual (and particularly heterosexual) strength, along with a disregard for – or absence of – emotional expression. AHEAD OF FATHER’S DAY, FOUNDER OF THE HAPPINESS INSTITUTE AND CO-HOST OF PODCAST ‘BE A MAN’ DISCUSSES THE IMPORTANCE OF POSITIVE MALE ROLE MODELS. It should be noted that not all of these attributes are entirely bad. In context and in moderation, a few may have a place in the life of an adult male. But it’s also important to note that…
