onward and forward

What a year 2020 has been! Despite the tough times, we’ve clapped and sang together, albeit from a distance, and rallied more tightly and loudly than ever. The women we’ve highlighted on page 86, in our sixth and final edition of #HerWorldHerStory, a project that started in March to celebrate Her World’s 60th anniversary, have all contributed in their own extraordinary ways. We’re also celebrating all things SG this month with our HW ♥Local package. On page 28, we feature a bunch of Singapore-based fashion brands that didn’t let a lack of funds stop them. They took to crowdfunding to help seed their budding enterprises, which have all gained substantial supporters and investors. At the same time, there’s a group of homegrown labels that were undeterred by the challenges and high cost of…

hw endorses: the structured sling bag

The modern vintage trend continues with the youthful sling bag. We love how it’s casual and cool yet classic all at once, making it truly the hit of the season – especially these ones from Dior and Louis Vuitton that come in a sturdier shape, decorated with the houses’ logos and tinged with shades of ’70s hippie vibe. The former’s Bobby bag, named after the late Monsieur Dior’s beloved canine companion, features a rigid saddle shape with the brand’s signature “CD” logo and a distinctive buckle on the front, as well as an extendable strap with snap hooks that reminds us of a dog leash. Meanwhile, Louis Vuitton’s LV Pont 9 bag recalls the name of the bridge that connects the brand’s Paris headquarters with the Left Bank area, famous for its…

smart shopping: valentino’s supervee bag

The best bags are functional, stylish and versatile – and the Valentino Garavani Supervee checks all the boxes. Made in Italy and in luxurious calfskin leather, the bag has a classic silhouette that lets the supersized logo take centrestage. The V logo is borrowed from the house’s 1968 archives, but feels ultra modern with its clean lines and gold hardware. With an adjustable shoulder strap, it can be worn as a shoulder bag or cross-body, and the magnetic flap closure means no fussing with zippers or twist locks. The perfect size for your essentials, it has two sections to keep everything neatly in place, and a handy slip pocket for cards. Practical and fashionable, no wonder Korean stars like Lee Sung Kyung and Jessica Jung are fans too. BRUNCH WORK DINNER…

kickstarter success stories: the fashion edition

Starting a business is never easy. A challenge faced by many start-ups is obtaining that initial moolah. One way to get it: crowdfunding. With an initial goal of as low as $1,000, one can get interested “backers” to fund your project by pledging a sum of money, either with no strings attached or with rewards in return. And one of the most popular platforms to do so is Kickstarter. Founded in 2009, the American-based company's mission is “to help bring creative projects to life”. As of June 2020, it has raised more than US$5 billion dollars (around S$6.96 billion) for over 183,000 successfully funded projects. While music start-ups are the most successfully funded (17 per cent), fashion enterprises are a force to watch too, making up 4.85 per cent. Still, it's a…
