self: a constant work in progress

It felt almost cathartic working on our November Self issue. In the last month, I evolved from someone who hadn’t worked out in three years to one who does so four times a week. I also increased my guided-meditation frequency from never to weekly. What prompted the change? I’m not entirely sure, but I’ve learnt that life doesn’t work in a linear way. I can’t deny that 2020 has made me rethink how and where I spend my time and money, but as we stay home more while being unable to travel, I have to admit that there are now fewer distractions. I started to see what I needed (and what I did not need) in my life, both physically and soulfully, and it’s heartening to know that I’m part of a collective…

hw endorses: the rolex oyster perpetual

A classic design? Investment-worthy? Reflects your dynamic personality? Yes, yes and yes. That’s the latest version of Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual 36 in a nutshell. A descendant of the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, introduced in 1926, the iconic timepiece now has lacquer dials in five cool new colours: candy pink, turquoise blue, yellow, coral red and green. What’s new on the inside: the calibre 3230, a movement debuted by the brand this year. Equipped with a self-winding module, its power reserve now extends to around 70 hours. It’s also more resistant to shocks and magnetic fields. Designed for both form and function, the distinctive three-piece link Oyster bracelet has been fitted with an extension system – a first for the Oyster Perpetual range. This folding Oysterclasp, together with the Easylink comfort extension link, allows…

mission possible: local label goes to hollywood

With fans such as A-listers Gwyneth Paltrow, Lady Gaga and Rita Ora, State Property definitely has bragging rights. Even former First Lady Michelle Obama has been seen wearing its designs. Stocked at major department stores in the US and loved by Hollywood, the homegrown contemporary fine jewellery label still calls Singapore home. Founded by jeweller Lin Ruiyin, 30, and industrial designer Afzal Imram, 31, in 2015, the brand is known for its “wearable art”, by fusing modern design with innovative techniques and traditional craftsmanship. The pair explain the brand’s vision: “Inspired by Art Deco, but brought into the modern day, striking a balance between minimalism and maximalism.” Their latest collection, entitled Voyager, is inspired by Carl Sagan’s Golden Record phonographs — found in the time capsule aboard 1977’s Voyager 1 and 2…

3 brands we can look forward to on net-a-porter

JIA JIA This New York-based label offers jewellery made from healing crystals and precious stones. All crystals are ethically hand-selected from mines. Each creation is modern and one-of-a-kind, bringing newness to the industry. ARTCLUB A progressive brand founded by Australian designer Heidi Middleton focusing on fashion, art and vintage. Recognising the importance of sustainability, the brand creates a dialogue between the brand, the maker and customer through the thoughtful touch of including the maker’s name within the garment. MINJUKIM We were looking for someone with a unique brand DNA, someone who could translate their designs into something our customer would buy and wear.
