In the lounge, the exposed beams painted a bright red are Wilna’s own handiwork – a perfect representation of the expression “nothing ventured, nothing gained”! Blend in This innovative rack made from an ordinary wooden bathmat is ideal for extra storage space above a desk or bedside table. Who lives here? Hilindie and Johan Stemmet and their son Sion (4) WHERE Montagu It was difficult to resist the allure of the Montagu mountains and the town she grew up in when Hilindie Stemmet and former school friend Johan got engaged nine years ago. “Although I was living in London at the time, we both grew up in Montagu and because Johan’s family owned a local business, it was a foregone conclusion that we would live there,” she says. “In the beginning it wasn’t easy to re-adjust to living in a small town but today I cannot think of a better place to raise our children.” After a year of marriage, they took ownership of a cosy old house in the village. Built in 1979, it was typical of homes dating from that era…

Who lives here? Neill and Cornel Strydom with their kids Sebastian (15) and Benjamin (13) WHERE Pretoria SIZE 600m² Love this colour? Dulux Lake of Grey might be just what you’re looking for. Neill and Cornel Strydom’s Pretoria home was once a riot of colour: the lounge had bright chartreuse walls, the bedroom was charcoal with an aubergine undertone, and the dining room and kitchen were a deep wheat colour. On top of that, their furniture was also painted in bold colours. However, after a relaxing vacation in their more neutral St Francis Bay holiday home, Cornel was inspired to change the colour scheme of their permanent residence. “I wanted to recreate the sense of calm we experienced in our holiday home,” she says. “So, all the bold colours on the walls had to go. I even…

Who lives here? Hannes Stander and DP Ferreira WHERE Rheenendal, Southern Cape SIZE 150 m² plus 45 m² (stoeps) Many years ago, the village of Rheenendal, halfway between Knysna and Sedgefield, was a forestry station deep in the indigenous forests of the area. This is where landscaper Hannes Stander and floral artist DP Ferreira have been living for the past 10 years; their company, Ecozest, boasts clients from around the country. Their house, dating from 1827, was originally a woodcutter’s cottage with sod and clay walls up to 80cm thick in places. Although a number of extensions have been built over the years, it has a cosy, homely feel. “Back in the day, people only built essential rooms – more or less like a nest for the family. These rooms, with their low ceilings and compact…

Who lives here? Janus and Jani Kotze with their kids Kobus (12), Daniël (8) and Ian (5) WHERE Swellendam When the Kotze family decided to renovate their Swellendam home, the kitchen was their first priority. “That’s where my husband and I spend our ‘date nights’, cooking and drinking – the old space just didn’t cut it!” says Jani. Before the renovation, during which the kitchen was gutted, there was very little counter space and no island. The floor tiles were dated and the space lacked personality. The couple decided to enlist the help of Lisa Spaarwater of Lemon & Lilac Paint Techniques who not only helped design the new kitchen but also got stuck into some of the paint jobs that were required once the new cabinets had been installed. Lisa got the local joinery…

Who lives here? Gert and Lizana Watson and their kids, Damian (11) and Sebastian (9) WHERE Kloof, Durban Gert and Lizana Watson have always been intrigued by Morocco and last year they finally began planning a family holiday to the exotic North African country. “But at the last minute we got cold feet about taking the kids to a place that’s not always child-friendly,” Gert says. The next best solution was to bring Morocco to them! Gert, a town planner and environmentalist, and Lizana, a choreographer, dancer and teacher, both work from home – so creating a comfortable and happy space for their family was a top priority. The lounge The couple were already in the process of renovating their home and decided to transform their lounge into a Moroccan-style space in which they can relax and…
