editor’s letter

As I sit at my computer to write this editor’s letter, with a slightly less dramatic expression than in the image below, I feel proud. (I don’t think women say they’re proud often enough, by the way. But that’s another letter.) I am so proud of the InStyle team, pictured below in the style of the emoji we are fond of sending to each other in lieu of seeing each other IRL. It’s been nine months now of putting a magazine together from home. Some of our team live alone, others in isolation to protect vulnerable friends and family. Some have traveled to stay with relatives, and some have relocated completely. Wherever we are, we look out for each other. Through all of this change, we have not lost our focus.…

GIRL ON FIRE What a stunning [October] cover! Cynthia Erivo is fire! As an African-American subscriber, I could not wait to see the rest of the photo shoot. Thanks, InStyle, for this beautiful and diverse issue! —KENDA TIBBS, Lansing, Mich. Even after all these years, magazines are still one of my favorite ways to gain inspiration. There’s nothing like the feeling of turning the page and feeling that rush of excitement from an outfit, a look, or an article. Growing up I always collected magazines, ripping pages out and organizing them into little binders, categorized by what I liked. I say my binders were the original Pinterest —@FINDMEON57TH BIGGER THAN FASHION As a longtime subscriber to InStyle, all I can say about your September issue is, “Wow!” Your goal to reflect the culture around us…

the cover

After 33 years in show business, Viola Davis knows who she is. “I know what’s good and what’s bad,” she says in our cover story. To reflect that sureness, stylist Elizabeth Stewart dressed the Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom actress in bold suits from Balmain, Gucci, and Kenneth Ize for our Pacific Palisades, Calif., shoot. Among Davis’s favorite looks was a houndstooth Wolk Morais ensemble, which she declared was “larger than life and audacious-rebellious.” Despite piling on heavy layers in the 100-degree heat, she danced nonstop to a Beyoncé playlist, especially when “Run the World (Girls)” blasted over the sound system. But the party came to a halt when, with two shots still to go, the electricity suddenly went out on set. “We had to finish before we lost the natural…

the start: the news in style

SHEER GENIUS When this saucy Stella McCartney dress landed on the scene in 2011, it was an instant hit with the red-carpet set. (Jane Fonda and Kate Winslet are just a few of the celebrities who have worn it.) This season the design returns as part of McCartney’s latest collection: 26 looks—one for each alphabet character—inspired by the brand’s values, from A for accountable to Z for zero waste. The letter attached to this iconic style? T for timeless, of course. Classic Move In partnership with the Outnet, British fashion fixture Laura Bailey creates eight elegant wardrobe staples for a cause close to her heart: Save the Children, which supports underserved youth around the globe. Prints Charming Sarah Flint teams up with interior-trimming company Morris & Co. on a special footwear collection in the label’s…
