editor’s welcome

I didn’t know what I was looking at the first time I saw a Discovery. I was driving up the M1 towards Sheffield in spring 1989, when a pair of what looked like Range Rovers with Truckman tops drove past. Being in my Series IIA, I had no chance of keeping up with them; and it was only later, when the Discovery was unveiled, that I realised that they were test mules for the new model. A lot has changed since and the relatively primitive vehicle (compared to current models) from 30 years ago is now a true classic. But the lineage is sound – it has always been a 4x4 for the family and a vehicle you can depend on to get you to your destination, in comfort, whatever the terrain or…

monster smash

Mike Nellist was never interested in Land Rovers. Sure, he could see other people were, but that enthusiasm passed him by. After all, why would you be interested in an old Defender? Rusty and crusty, old-school technology, noisy, uncomfortable. Obviously, the world is full of much better vehicles. Mike knows all about that because he has his own business, which can fairly claim to be Cheshire’s leading Mini specialist – and we’re talking new Mini here, BMW’s slick, urban object of desire. Mike’s a factory-trained vehicle technician. ‘I worked mostly on Rover 200 cars,’ he tells us. ‘As part of the apprenticeship we went to Solihull and had a go on their off-road course.’ Still not interested? ‘Well, I always liked the look of them, but I didn’t need a 4x4.’…

family matters

Inspiration for the 110 came from Mike’s family – especially the kids, who loved his previous green 90 but soon outgrew it. Camping weekends in remote areas are what this truck is all about. Bacon can be sizzling within minutes thanks to easy access through those gullwing lockers, and cooking gear being attached to the rear door. Also in the pipeline is a roof tent for Mum and Dad.…
