‘Get ready for a great show’ The LRO Show is almost upon us, and this issue is a taster of some of the great stuff you’ll get to see at the East of England Showground on 11-12 September. I’ve been lucky enough to drive a Bowler Defender Challenge 90; Bowler is bringing one to the show and showing it off in the main arena. And you can look all over it and chat to the guys on the Bowler stand. Our cover star this issue is Ronnie Maughan Jnr’s gorgeous Defender 110 – and you’ll find that on the YRM stand. You’ll be able to see all of the little bits that make this a forever Land Rover. Elsewhere, overlander Julie Osborne-Tame (p68) will be joining us for one of the Team LRO…

forever defender

One of the famous facts about Defenders is that they were all hand-built – a term that often goes with low-volume, luxury cars. The phrase conjures up romantic images of master craftsmen wearing smocks, agonising over whatever specialist task they’ve honed their skills on over years of study and practice, for the greater good of the finished vehicle. The reality on the Defender’s production line would have been very different – it was still a relatively high-volume motor, built from the outset to be worked hard in harsh conditions and so fit and finish was second to functionality. Defenders were put together quickly, and some of the production methods (and inherent design flaws of parts) meant they’d need to come apart again after a number of years, as the dreaded rust…

who are yrm?

YRM Metal Solutions is a family business, formed in 2005 by Ron Maughan Snr (right), whose experience in fabrication and passion for improving original designs turned out to be a recipe for success. ‘Our old Land Rover’s bulkhead was going rusty, so I made a repair panel. I made a few extra and sold them on eBay, and that was product No. 001. We sell over 1000 now, and are always looking to expand. It costs just as much to make something wrong as it does right, so we take the time to improve each part over standard so it’ll last as long as possible, and that it’ll fit right every time.’ Ronnie Jnr is the man responsible for this stunner of a Defender. ‘It’s something I’ve had in my mind…

OKAY – THAT’S A WRAP! Land Rover North America reveals a limited run of Trophy Edition Defenders with a Camel Trophy-inspired wrap You may have seen Camel Trophy fans already treat their new Defenders to bespoke yellow paint jobs and stickers to honour the legendary 1980-2000 challenge series, but the new Trophy Edition is Land Rover’s first homage to the Camel Trophy with the L663 Defender. If the name sounds familiar, you’ll recall the £195k Works V8 Trophy – a limited run of 25 revamped examples of the previous-generation Defender, announced earlier this year. Priced at a far-more-attainable $90k (£65k), the new Trophy Edition Defenders wear a unique yellow protective wrap combined with an extended Black Exterior Pack, plus a range of accessories. In the UK the protective wrap is a £3775 extra,…

news in brief

Kenya catch us…? In Kenya, the V8 90 of Sussex-based Gumtree 4x4 was driven to victory in the unmodified class at this year’s Rhino Charge, the off-road navigation challenge in aid of wildlife conservation. A local team of five took the place of the usual team members who were confined to the UK due to Covid. Driving the 90 that won the inaugural UK Rhino Charge in 1997 and was shipped to Kenya in 2001, the team raised £9400 for the Rhino Ark charity. LWB Evoque for China Q: What’s bigger than an Evoque but smaller than a Velar? A: The Evoque L, which recently debuted in China. Catering for Chinese-market preferences, the 125mm of extra wheelbase means more legroom in the back, where passengers also get (slightly) reclinable electric seats. Tata’s…
