iron man

“I think, initially, the suit made the man, and the man had to catch up.” Did you always think Iron Man would be a hit and then you’d go on to make Marvel’s The Avengers? There’s a bit of osmosis that comes from being part of the Marvel Studios family, where you start thinking about the company and the kind of legacy as a whole. It definitely made sense to sidestep into something that’s huge. Fortunately, both Thor and Captain America did big business and were well reviewed, so it warranted what we were already halfway through doing. It’s all very fortunate. Joss Whedon was able to make the characters relatable. How important is that for the Avengers films? Joss worries about all the things that artists don’t have to worry about, but he’d…

captain america

“I love the character: he’s everything I wish I could be as a man.” What first attracted you to the role of Captain America? Initially, I hesitated because of the commitment. [Captain America: The First Avenger] was a big movie, and whether it worked or didn’t, there’s a lifestyle change. If the movie succeeded, there’s a certain loss of anonymity and privacy that I wasn’t sure I was ready to compromise with. And if it failed, it’s a whole other can of worms! If it had just been one movie, it was all there and it was a great role. I love the character: he’s everything I wish I could be as a man, and he’s good for the sake of good. That’s a fun character to try and portray. And the creative…

thor

“[The Avengers are] kind of like the most dysfunctional family you’d ever meet!” Did you know early on that Thor was going to tie directly into Marvel’s The Avengers? When I signed on, it was for a few Thor and Avengers [films], and my focus was to get Thor done first. But the first comic books I actually read [before getting the part] were Avengers! I was working with Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard on Cabin in the Woods, and they both gave me Avengers comic books, so that was my introduction to Thor. Then it came full circle – I ended up working with Joss on Marvel’s The Avengers and we had Drew on set during the shoot. Thor has an evolving relationship with humans. How does his take on them change…
