richard cory

Whenever Richard Cory went down town, We people on the pavement looked at him: He was a gentleman from sole to crown, Clean favored, and imperially slim. And he was always quietly arrayed, And he was always human when he talked; But still he fluttered pulses when he said, “Good-morning,” and he glittered when he walked. And he was rich—yes, richer than a king—And admirably schooled in every grace: In fine, we thought that he was everything To make us wish that we were in his place. So on we worked, and waited for the light, And went without the meat, and cursed the bread; And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, Went home and put a bullet through his head.…

once in a lifetime

It took a very rich and determined individual over 20 years and millions of dollars to pull off one of the greatest feats in watch collecting—assembling a full set of four Patek Philippe perpetual calendar ref. 2499 series chronographs, dating from the 1950s through the 1980s. And this season the world’s top horological auction house, Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo, is set to sell them to the highest bidder in one of the most important watch collecting events ever staged. The four impossible-to-obtain Pateks will lead Phillips’ upcoming The Geneva Watch Auction XIII, marking the first time in nearly 20 years that all four series of the ref. 2499 are being offered in a single sale. Aurel Bacs, Phillips’ Senior Consultant and Alex Ghotbi, Head of Watches, Continental Europe…

zillers’ killer

“LIKE A GUNMETAL JAGUAR WAITING TO JUMP INTO ITS STRIDE” Thundering through the mist from the future, a cyborg arrives clad in a sleek armadillo-like exoskeleton. He arrives on this thing. As if BMW were still cranking out fossil-fueled bikes in 2221. And the “Zillers Thriller” is where it’s at. At least that is what this bike says to me, looking at it at a standstill planted on its bespoke pneumatics. It is like the fantastic lovechild of Terminator, Mad Max, Tron, Blade Runner and The Man In The High Castle. All bedecked in standard-issue Russian army matte grey atop its seamless aluminum curves. What a piece of kit. BMW Motorrad Russia commissioned and paid for it. Dmitry Golubchikov of Zillers Custom Garage in Moscow dreamed it up and built it, taking a…

nectar of the gods

When I die and go to heaven there had better be DRC. For I certainly have not imbibed enough of the wines of the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The juice of the gods sucked from the ground through Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes into your glass via Burgundy in France. I often joke about drinking Withnail and I style, sucking on the marrow of life, drinking tea, and eating cake, and drinking “the finest wines available to humanity.” Well this is no joke. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti—aka DRC to those lucky enough to drink it regularly—simply is the finest wine available to humanity. Full stop. Period. End of discussion. If an angel were to land right now and be offered a glass he’d probably agree to cut off his wings…

blade runner

She’s a badass with a blade. So bad, it’s in her name–Sonya Blade, the sexy slasher from your youth, back when you first rocked Midway’s classic fight game, Mortal Kombat. As you might have heard, Blade is back, and she’s as beautiful and brutal as ever in the person of Jessica McNamee, who brings a beguiling mix of power and allure to the immortal character in the latest big screen adaptation, which was set to be released in April. “My aim is to be challenged and somewhat scared as possible in each role I take. Half the challenge is conquering these characters that are a departure for me,” Jessica tells Maxim. If you’ve seen the new movie then you know she she is quite the conqueror, even as she mentors young Cole…

leader of the pack

Ten years ago, cyclist Andrej Hauptman was scouting prospects when he spotted a racer trailing the pack by 100 meters. Much younger than the rest, he was struggling to keep up. As a Road World Championship medalist and head of selectors for the Slovenian national cycling team, Hauptman’s words carried weight when he advised the race organizers to provide support for the young man. It was then they informed him that the scrawny 13-year-old wasn’t in last place. He was, in fact, about to lap the competition. The racer was Tadej Pogačar, who went on to win the 2020 Tour de France. At the age of 22, the Slovenian cyclist who rides for UAE Team Emirates is the youngest winner of the famed race in 111 years. “I had my dreams,…
