Dedicated to the cause The news from the Indian Ocean has been relentless. Two Golden Globe yachts were rolled and dismasted within 48 hours and skipper Abhilash Tomy, who I tipped as a potential winner, appears to have suffered a severe back injury. As we went to press both he and Irish skipper Gregor McGuckin had been rescued. For the full story, see page 6. On a completely different tack, I spent the day sailing with two liveaboards during the Southampton Boat Show – an American and a Haitian, Dan and Kika – who have made themselves famous by releasing weekly videos that they devise, film, edit and post themselves on their YouTube channel Sailing Uma (Uma is the name of their boat). golden globe race skipper rescued after three days

Injured Golden Globe Race skipper, Abhilash Tomy, has been successfully rescued from the Indian Ocean after waiting three days for rescue. The 39-year-old was evacuated from his dismasted yacht, Thuriya, some 1,900 miles south-west of Perth, Australia, by the crew of the French fisheries patrol vessel Osiris at 05.30UTC on 24 September 2018. They boarded Thuriya using inflatable Zodiac boats and administered immediate first aid to Tomy before transferring him via stretcher to Osiris, which has medical facilities on board. The Indian Navy Commander had been confined to his bunk after sustaining a back injury when his yacht was rolled 360° in a storm on 21 September. This meant he was unable to cut away the rigging, which fortuitously acted as a sea anchor in the stormy conditions, which saw 70 knot winds…

investigation after yachts ‘clipped’ by cruise ship

The Dart Harbour and Navigation Authority has launched an investigation after a cruise ship, piloted by the Dart harbourmaster, ‘clipped’ four moored yachts in the Devon port. Captain Mark Cooper was turning the 18,591 tonne Saga Pearl II when it hit the boats on harbour residential moorings. The ship’s captain, Kim Tanner, then berthed the vessel on Dartmouth’s mainstream moorings. The incident happened at 0700 on 29 August. No one was injured and the yachts sustained only ‘superficial damage’. The chair of the Dart Harbour and Navigation Authority, Mark Hubbard, said in a statement: ‘During a manoeuvre to turn, the ship clipped four yachts causing superficial damage. The harbour office is now making all efforts to contact the owners of the yachts involved.’ ‘Records from the incident are being collated and will be analysed…

co alarms to be mandatory on the inland waterways

From next year all boaters using inland waterways in England and Scotland will have to fit a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm. The new regulation from the Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) will affect cruisers using BWML marinas, all Canal & River Trust waterways, The Broads, Bristol Harbour, Scottish Canals, the rivers Medway, Thames, Blackwater, Chelmer, Cam, Dee, Wey, and other waterways run by navigation authorities that apply BSS regulations. The BSS is currently consulting on the measure before it comes into effect from January 2019. Individual navigation authorities will implement the new requirement, with officers carrying out spot checks of boats. From 1 April 2019, mandatory CO alarms will become part of the BSS examination of vessels, which takes place every four years and is mandatory for those who wish to cruise BSS regulated…

holyhead marina electrical fire

A fire which destroyed an engineering workshop at Anglesey’s Holyhead Marina was caused by faulty electrical equipment, an investigation by North Wales Fire and Rescue Service has concluded. It took firefighters three hours to bring the blaze under control on 23 August 2018. No one was injured and no boats were affected. The adjacent Holyhead RNLI building suffered heat damage, and volunteers had to act quickly to move both the inshore and all-weather lifeboats to safety The workshop, a listed building formerly the Trinity House Buoy Maintenance Depot, was left a shell. Tools and equipment were also destroyed. Holyhead Marina’s Geoff Garrod said the building would be restored and would be part of the development plans for the facility. ‘renewables’ skipper sails 2,500 miles

Swedish skipper Bjorn Bertoft has successfully sailed to seven countries around the Baltic Sea using just the power of the sun, wind and water. He cruised the 2,500 miles from Oslo to Stockholm via Denmark, Germany, Latvia, Estonia and Finland. The three-month 100 Sun Wind Water adventure was made aboard Bertoft’s 34ft Smaragd Johanna which had been specifically modified, including the installation of an electric engine which recharges via solar panels and the boat’s pod drive propeller. Speaking to PBO after completing his challenge on 6 September, Bertoft said he felt ‘satisfied’ with his achievement and was now ‘hungry’ for more opportunities to get his fossil free sailing message across. He said there were numerous highlights throughout the journey, including meeting Volvo Ocean Race skipper and marine litter campaigner, Dee Caffari, during a stopover…
