waiting for the tide

To receive the editor’s monthly email newsletter, go to our website: www.pbo.co.ukExtraordinary performanceFinishing the Golden Globe falls into the category of ‘extraordinary’, but even those who had to withdraw from the race did an amazing job to even get themselves across the startline. Find out a bit more about what it takes to get all the way around, non-stop, solo ahead of the rest on page 32.And there are some other extraordinary performances in this issue. Emrhys Barrell has been testing 12V lithium batteries – 60Ah-120Ah capacity – and describes their performance thus: “We went into the test sceptical about some of the claims for lithium batteries, but ended up quite amazed. Photos are appreciated, letters may be edited.AIS on AndroidI always enjoy David Berry’s very informative articles in PBO but must take issue with him when he says in ‘See and be seen’ (Feb19) that ‘it is currently impossible to overlay AIS data from a marine VHF onto any Android chartplotter’.The set-up on my own boat is a Standard Horizon Matrix AIS/GPS GX2200E DSC VHF Radio which provides AIS data from the same masthead antenna as used for VHF reception and transmission, I presume through a built-in active splitter.
